Ember Kaboom is a throwback to the Super Mario Bros games from the late 80s. The biggest fault is probably that the game engine is Construct 2, which cannot mimic the same overall mechanics of the original Mario Bros. Players who spent countless hours on the original Mario Bros will realize fairly quickly. For instance, sliding on ice block levels shoots the player one direction rather than decreasing the friction speed. There is also lack of any sort of sprint button or power-ups that balanced out the game play in the original Mario Bros.

However, when looking past that comparison and seeing it as something different, it’s actually fairly fun to play and is its own unique game. The characters and worlds look fresh, the level design is decent, fitting music, and it balances out some of the frustrating mechanics with easy 1ups and checkpoints. It’s great to see someone create something like this as an inspiration rather than try to clone/copy it.
