yknow? It's been quite a few years now since I played this, and every once in a while it pops into my mind.
Could I tell you what it's about? Not really. Could I tell you what I did and why I did it? Nope.

But what I can tell you is that it is insanely intriguing, completely unique, and really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weird in a mildly indescribable way.

If you want an unforgiving game that, if playing blind you will be starting the game over.. and over.. and maybe over again but, is weirdly rewarding and makes you say what the ♥♥♥♥ every second of it and every time it pops into your head years later?

Then this is for you!

edit; go into this blind your first go around or two, but after for the love of god read some tricks
and hints because you WILL need them

I will say, as a game created mostly by one person, this is an amazing feat and love and dedication.

pros
This game is gorgeous, like many have already said, it is incredibly reminiscent of more old school Zelda games. The art is charming, the enemy designs are fun, and the different levels and areas are diverse in look and atmosphere.

A pretty cool aspect is the aforementioned manual, instead of the game holding your hand and telling you how to do things and accomplish what not, where to go, etc. you have an empty manual you start the game. As you explore you find more and more pages that not only explain controls in the early game, but also explains different aspects of items and game mechanics, and provides you with maps for found or future areas. I find this mechanic quite unique and enjoy that the manual is written in a foreign "game" language so it feels more immersive when you look through and realize you can make sense of its contents. I've seen some people mention how difficult the game is to navigate, or how hard it is to find your next objective. Really, if you explore everything you'll find manual pages that give hints on where to go next.

The story is quite mysterious and fun, gets darker than I expected at times which is something loved.
On top of that the soundtrack is just *chefs kiss*, might be worth playing for the music alone tbh

cons
However! As much as I see comments saying that the "combat is tight", I have to really disagree. I'm a big souls fan, Hollow Knight fan, Cuphead fan, you name it. I like challenging games with fair combat. This game tries but fails in quite a few aspects. The combat isn't awful of anything, but it can be frustrating to do everything right and still take damage

Hitting enemies can be an absolute challenge. Maybe it's the sword's range? I think that and a combination of poor hitboxes, along with some enemies having very tiny weak points, make some fights crazy frustrating. I can be right in front of them swinging my sword a dozen times and nothing lands??? I'm especially looking at you boss scavenger, the bane of my existence.. It makes fights unnecessarily irking, because enemies move all over the place and are typically pretty fast. Running to enemies that are constantly moving with what I guess is a short shortsword isnt enjoyable imo so *opposite of chef's kiss*

Overall the combat feels a bit unbalanced and clunky at times, the shield doesn't always actually shield me from damage (like it's there? I have the stamina? Why am I getting hit?), and the difficulty feels artificial and unnecessary, mostly due to a few poor combat mechanics. I'd say I'm pretty damn good at dodging in games, blocking, knowing when to parry, and still these mechanics can really be irritating. I can't imagine what it's like for someone who plays more casually.
Now I'm not a fan of consumable items (they stress me out fr fr) but as a "soulslike" or game thats packed with difficult fights and bosses, surviving with melee alone shouldn't be the issue that it is. This game is difficult for the wrong reasons.

Not to mention I can't do the "special attack"? Maybe I'm just doing something wrong but when I've looked it up it seems lots of people have had issues with this move specifically so idk. Think I successfully did it twice the whole game lol

Now, the focus feature is basically the game's way of having you lock onto enemies. Except you can't actually lock onto a specific enemy permanently. There are tons of instances of fighting groups of enemies where there are melee, bombers, and shooters attacking you all at once. I can't tell you how many times I hadn't alerted enemies to my presence yet and tried to take out the sharpshooters by hitting them with my own long range weapon while focusing on them, only to take them down to 1/4 of their health and have my focus automatically shift to the melee enemies coming closer to me. A bit of a stupid mechanic, and it's resulted in me taking damage that I wouldn't have if it would have just stayed on the target I actually chose. This makes using any ranged weapon far more difficult than it needs to be.

When it comes to exploration, I was having a lot of fun with it at first. Many of the chests you find (or don't find) are hidden by perspective, which doesn't really bother me but may not be everyone's cup of tea. What I had a problem with is this game also has the "metroidvania" tag, and I think an important staple of that genre, and just exploration games in general, is that when you backtrack there should be a reason to want to back track. The secret treasures in this game are all pretty hard to find, and most people are gonna miss a majority of them without a guide I'm sure. Along with most chests just containing money, this makes me feel as though there's not as much incentive to explore as the creator might have liked. You get these cool abilities near end game that allow you to travel faster and reach items you couldn't before, but there aren't any new areas to explore or anything, and it's lowkey boring going back to places you've been with nowhere new to go. Seems like a missed opportunity.

Not to mention the "puzzles". Though I haven't played too many classic Zelda games, I do know the puzzles were a little better thought out and diverse. Tunic has a few good mysteries throughout, most of which stem from your manual and learning to navigate it and read it even though it's in a different language and you don't have the full picture of what the game is about or what you're trying to do. However some of these puzzles are honestly a bit impossible to figure out without looking some stuff up. I'd like to think I'm pretty good at connecting the dots in games and deduction and whatnot, but some of the game's puzzles just had so little context I'm not sure how most people would solve them.

I will say! That there are many options to lower the difficulty, including an easier mode, a god mode, infinite stamina mode etc. Which I'm not sure are good things to have available to players (besides easy mode) at the start of the game? Seems weird that this game seems to flaunt how difficult it is but then allows players cheats from the very start. At least allow them to be unlocked after the final boss or possibly through in-game means like maybe through that shady as hell shopkeeper.

And on top of it all I encountered 3 separate bugs that kept me from doing two separate achievements. I 100% almost everything I play so I mean??? This is probably what bothered me most. I had two fairy puzzles just... not work at all. I mean I tried all that I could to reset the area, etc. and they still won't work for me.
And then worst of all I collected every page for the manual in the game but SOMEHOW page 2? These pages come in sets, so pages 2 and 3 are picked up together. I have page 3 in my manual and yet page 2 is still missing? I have no option to pick up the pages again either so I guess I'm out of luck in that respect, and I have no desire to play this game again :/

I'm still enjoying this game experience, don't get me wrong, but for a game that has "puzzle" and "souls-like" as two of its main tags, I don't think it quite lives up. But still a pretty fun experience, and if you like to explore and don't mind an arbitrarily difficult game (that you can make stupidly easy), then maybe this is for you. 6/10

(Also I've seen many comparisons to Death's Door, a game that I absolutely adore but found way too easy, and I'll say I think that game did a lot of the exploration and combat far better. But basically if you loved that game you'll like this one. If you love this game you'll like Death's Door. This whole review is actually secretly an ad for Death's Door /s)

I love that one dude, Lewis Walker , that just shows up at the most random moments and ♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ up??? Damn this is HIS boat, he just goes where he likes. Like I know nothing about this man but he is my favorite.

Okay but anyway, this is one of the best puzzle games I've played in recent years. I'd avoided it for a while as the art was a bit off-putting to me (I changed the color mode and that helped), but I promise you'll get used to it quick and it ends up very much working in favor of the game-play.

It's a pretty simple game in all honesty: you're an insurance investigator in the 1800s. You show up on a ship that reappeared after disappearing 5 years ago. All 60 residents on board are long dead and your job is to figure out who they were, how they died, and who murdered them. All you have is a magic pocket watch that shows you the final moments leading up to each person's death. Beyond the game explaining the mechanics to you, it doesn't hold your hand whatsoever.

What you have to do is simply pay attention. This game is all about the tiny details in your environment, in the way characters interact with each other, in the art pieces and ship logs given to you at the start. Absolutely everything can be solved logically and the game gives you everything you need to figure it all out. And yet somehow it's still such an incredibly challenging and fun little gem. The story is phenomenal too, and went places I wan't quite expecting.

Highly highly recommended if you like logic puzzles or detective games and mysteries. I can't think of too many games that play similarly, but if you like games like Papers Please, Myst, Her Story, or Outer Wilds then maybe this one is for you.

Oh wow. This blew me away.
It seems like a criminally underrated game to me as I'd never heard of it (though I'm not in the Skyrim modding community so maybe that's why) but this was nothing like what I was expecting tbh.
It's a pretty short (5-10hrs) self contained little mystery game with incredibly fun mechanics, likeable (and unlikeable) characters, and a very interesting story that you'll want to uncover.

I don't even really know what to say beyond please buy it... you won't be disappointed.

Also, I'm in love with Galerius (my pal Gal), and Equitia both.

Okay so remember when Blockbuster was still a thing?

Anyway, first time I played Psychonauts I was 8 and renting it from Blockbuster. It was a weird quirky game that strangely managed to impact me for the rest of my life. (I would not be the same person if i hadn't played Psychonauts as a kid. That's dramatic, I know, but that's how much I love this game/these games. Cannot stress enough how much the humor and art style has impacted me as a person)

This was an amazing sequel! Now it's been a few years since I played the first, but honestly I think this sequel is somehow even better than the original. Yeah it sucked waiting 15+ years for the second game, but honestly it was kind of worth it. This is miraculously the most perfect sequel I could have asked for. Every area was unique and fun, the new powers and badge options were simultaneously hilarious and useful. It manages to consistently nail the heart and soul of what made the first game so amazing, while also creating so much more depth in the way it tells its stories and its storytelling in general.
It dealt with serious topics like mental health issues, the loss of loved ones, and PTSD (to name a few), and realistically damaged characters in creative, fun, and sometimes really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weird ways.

I would say the most lackluster part of the game would be the combat, and even that isn't bad or even all that difficult. Not to mention that the amazing story, characters, and worlds make up for that anyway.

The most perfect sequel of all sequels.
Thank you Doublefine, for finally making this game a reality.

Only thing missing from this game is the Milkman :(

Well uh, refunding this because I can't get it to work at all. I launched it in full screen and it proceeded to have a total meltdown. I can't see the game at all but the music is playing and I can no longer get to the settings to change it back to windowed so I can't play it at all. I don't see any answers or support for this problem in the discussions. Disappointed by this :/

really considering a negative view just simply because I got this for free 3 days ago, have barely played it, and yet "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys has been in my head ever since and that's got to be some form of torture right?

Took me about two hours to 100% the game, so I would definitely say that while this game isn't quite worth $15 in my opinion, it is still worth playing. Really reminds me a lot of Tacoma: focusing on learning about the characters and their interpersonal relationships as they lived and worked, while simultaneously solving the mystery of their disappearance and the subsequent, slow destruction of the station they living on

Also the plot twist was GOOD
