A little disappointed because I had heard so much about this game, and it sounded like something I would absolutely love: story driven, heartwarming and sad, an RPG Maker game...
Literally the perfect game for me

But honestly playing this game was like torture.

I personally love puzzle games, but this game had only one type of puzzle, and you had to do it over and over and over throughout different areas of the game. There wasn't a challenge or something to look forward to, instead it was just overwhelmingly tedious. The type of puzzles the game has aren't fun in the first place, let alone the 20th time. Collect the memories, do a little jigsaw puzzle thing, rinse and repeat twenty. more. damn. times.
I hated it.

On top of that, controlling your character and interacting with the environment sucked as well. I literally got stuck on every bush and stick and mf rock that the game had to offer. Walking anywhere outside was terrible, fighting the zombies was terrible, riding those stupid horses was terrible. The whole game just went back and forth back and forth and yet I feel like I got absolutely nowhere.

I'm writing this review months after having finished playing it, thinking maybe it would give myself more time to focus on how the story impacted me instead of how the controls impacted me. But no. I still hate this game.

The story, which is actually pretty good, can't save this game from the 6 grueling hours it took me to finish and all the frustration I felt at how this game played. Save yourself the time and money and read the wikipedia or something. Even a lets play sounds boring. This story would have been SO much better as a movie or a novel.

Everything about this game was an absolutely incredible experience and it deserves every award it has won

-------------------

Graphics:
Although the environment graphics are probably just a bit above standard for games these days, the amount of effort they put into creating Senua herself is crazy. She's incredibly detailed and realistic (I watched videos detailing how they captured her animation and it's all pretty incredible). Seeing the amount of emotions detailed on her face, and her actions throughout the game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing, so much work went into making her model as lifelike as possible and they did a phenomenal job

Audio:
Amazing! Absolutely amazing! You miss out on a whole other experience if you play this game without headphones. The game is about psychosis (hearing auditory and visual hallucinations) and all throughout the game these voices that are in Senua's head give you hints, comment on things that are going on around you, encourage you to take certain risks, and negatively put you down if you make a mistake or make a decision the voices don't like.
The ambiance you get through listening to them makes it feels like they're actually in the back of your own head, not Senua's. It's a very interesting and immersive experience that REALLY brings this story to life

Puzzles:
This was actually my least favourite part of the game, and I'm someone who absolutely loves puzzles. I think more variety would have added to the experience in my opinion. Most of the puzzles (like 95%) are based on finding runes that are hidden in your environment. This is a fine puzzle idea in itself, but it gets old after doing it all throughout the game.
I also struggled with getting the runes to align. There were quite a few times when I was sure I had found the correct answer, tried focusing, and it end up not working/aligning. I would then have to leave and come back for it to work, or occasionally watch a youtube video telling me how to line it up exactly. There were a few puzzles specifically where I had the rune lined up in the correct place and it just wasn't working because I was like a centimeter off. It got really frustrating at times

Combat:
Okay I do understand how some people could dislike the fighting in this game. It takes more than just button smashing. If you want to succeed you actually have to think about what you're doing and what moves you're performing. And I think this is what some people didn't like.
But I LOVED it. I thought that combat was incredibly fun! I do admit that it is a bit hard to understand/get used to because the game doesn't provide you with a lot of direction (plus I played this with a Playstation controller and it only listed the Xbox controls in the menu so I was just winging it at first), but once I understood what I was doing boy did I enjoy the fighting.
As a big fan of the Souls series the combat system actually reminded me a bit of it. You have to think about your actions... should you dodge or block, should you do a light or heavy attack, when should you kick. I think some people who have played this argue that they feel that the combat doesn't really fit into the game. Which in a way, I do agree with that. It feels strange fighting at first, but as you continue along you just feel like you're fighting Senua's demons and it just makes perfect sense

Story:
Oh god was the story good. I've always been a big lover of Celtic and Norse mythos... and the amount of time spent researching about the history of the Picts and Vikings and their gods and culture for this game is pretty amazing. You learn a lot about the world Senua is a part of through the Lorestones (Talismans?) you find scattered throughout the game. It tells you the history of the gods and as you play the game you see how the gods intertwine into Senua's own life and personal demons. You see how her "lack" of faith in the gods led to a ruined childhood and how she channels her inner strength and fear into defeating the gods she meets along her way on a journey through the underworld.

---------------

While it is a largely depressing game, it deals with fighting against self-hatred and (realistically pictured) mental illness through Senua's efforts to find peace for her dead lover's soul

a beautiful experience 10/10

Also, the trailer for the second game goes HARD and I am so ready for it to be released

Yes, it is inferior to the original Amnesia in literally everyway, but if reviewing this as a game not by comparing it to it's predecessor, I'd say it's still a fun and easy experience. It can be finished in less than 5 hours, and I still think the story and prose is very interesting except for that part of the game where the pigs are set loose on London? What the ♥♥♥♥ was up with that???

Honestly, probably a 6/10. Still fun enough to try once but that's it.

Going to completely re-write my review, and bring my score down from an 9/10 to an 8/10

I personally ran into a few glitches (one of which was game stopping) but I won't deduct that from my rating, since most players likely won't experience these problems themselves.

Alright so,

Pros

♦ Lovely graphics. The different areas of the game vary quite a lot in terms of detail and visuals and honestly I love how different each (planet?) place is. Also the colours and feel of each place is just 10/10

♦ The story is honestly incredible. Maybe not on par with Cyan's original Myst series, but then again, how many games out there have stories as interesting as Myst's?
Anyway, a lot of the story is learned from picking up notes you find and reading them, and then piecing the plot together yourself. IAs you go throughout the game the story gets more complex and strange, and all of a sudden we're blowing ♥♥♥♥ up

♦ The soundtrack is very nice as well, though it gets really intense at weird times (like louder in certain areas or what not), but overall it fits the game very well

♦ THE PUZZLES. THEY'RE SO GOOD! At least, for the first two areas (I'll talk more about how it starts to falter in the third area in the cons section).
Regardless, the first two areas of the game reminded me about all the reasons why I loved the Myst series in the first place. These are real-world logic based puzzles (nothing too crazy or convoluted, I'm looking at you Secret of Monkey Island).
This game does not hold your hand, it doesn't give you hints, it just brings you to Hunrath and says good luck! Classic Myst, gotta love it.

Cons

Slight spoilers so read at your own risk

♦ The Villein system. So I thought the villein system was incredibly cool. I really enjoyed figuring out how it worked, and learning how it being base 4 actually applied to creating numbers. Kinda made me enjoy a little math, and I was excited to use it in the game.
But then, in the end, it was incredibly underutilised.
I know the game doesn't hold your hand, but it also never gave you the chance to test your skills, or actually use the villein system to progress through the game.
Now you could argue that the bridges in Maray were for that purpose, but I've played this game twice and I still have NO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idea what I'm actually supposed to be inputting on the bridges.
I just push my way through, input the number 1203 (which definitely isn't the right answer) each time, and call it a day.
Not actually sure what they wanted us to do here. Honestly the villein system had a lot of potential but... eh.
Didn't impede the game. Was just disappointing.

♦ Third area. The maze. THE MAZE. I took off a FULL point off for this ♥♥♥♥ show. It's an interesting concept, and if it didn't take so much damn trial and error, loading screens that last for-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥-ever, and slow moving elevators... then maybe it could have been fun.
But no.
In an effort to continue my "no guide" streak, I figured the maze out on my own. It took 3+ hours, a bunch of notes, a drawn version of the maze where I cut out the moving pieces (in an effort to figure it out without having to teleport all over the place), and so much damn frustration. Honestly, it almost ruined the game for me. I don't even know if it was worth solving. Sure I felt proud as hell doing it but like... at what cost? Just use a guide and many saves lmao, save yourself the pain. And looking at other people's comments on the maze tells me that many people feel the same way. Honestly awful.

♦ ♥♥♥♥♥♥ save system. Just give us the ability to make multiple saves, don't make us make copies in the "load game" screen. That's just stupid

♦ Also, for those who don't realise you can make multiple saves (like me on my first playthrough) then it's real freaking awful to include a Mofang Sphere that kills you AND RUINS YOUR SAVE DOING IT. WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥. I was lucky I had a second save the second time I played through, so I could reload that. But the one I was originally on is now permanently a black screen with the credits rolling.
Imagine playing on one save, going up to a red sphere you think is cool, and then ruining your game. ??????????????????????

Glitches

♦ My first playthrough, I got all the way to the Gauntlet puzzle, put the game down for about a week, and then came back to find my save erased. Nice.

♦ Now, I did actually get one (1) chance to show off my skills and knowledge with the villein system once I reached the pods. I input the number needed, realised I wanted to backtrack and put a different number in (for an achievement), and so I loaded a save from a few minutes prior.
This led to the screen of the villein freezing with the number 217 (which is literally not used in this game) and me freaking out thinking my game had broke, once again.
Turns out it was just showing that as the input (217), but it wasn't actually there, and I just had to go ahead in put in the numbers I needed over top the number that was stuck there.

I had to learn this from an obscure as hell video (65 views) on youtube, and I have seen a few other discussion posts from as early as 2016. Disappointing that this game has been out for a few years and this problem hasn't been patched yet.

Anyway, ignoring the stress the bugs/glitches caused me, and not counting the maze, the game would be a solid 9/10 in my book. I really really do enjoy playing it.

But ♥♥♥♥ the maze. 8/10

This is one of the classic RPG Maker horror games, and therefore it will always have a special place in my heart.

It's a game that starts off relatively simple, but as you play you realise just how much depth the story has, and how well written the story is

It's just a fun little game, with good plot, good scares, and good puzzles
9/10

Also I'm glad all these RPG Maker games are being put on Steam, supporting the creators is always nice!

Waking up ancient, sleeping gods with a kalimba is always fun!

I would definitely only recommend this to players who don't mind walking simulators or games with no/very little actual gameplay besides walking

This game focuses a lot more on the storytelling and the visuals, then on whether the gameplay is fun or not.

Now, I don't mind just walking through games, but when combined with tedious arm and climbing mechanics it starts to falter a bit...

Pros:

✔ Beautiful graphics: They're simple but they really show off an interesting world, and this game really relies on the player being interested in looking at the scenery (since there isn't really anything else to do)
✔ Music: The music helped really make this game as well. It's a very calm and simple game, and the music just felt so natural

♦Loved the song that played in the desert (or was it ocean?)

✔ Story: Definitely interesting enough for me to continue playing. I want to know more about this evil Empress we keep getting visions of, and I want to know where this mysterious ghost is leading me
Edit: Until I got to the end of the story anyway, the story had been interesting

Cons:

✘ Gameplay: kinda sucks.

♦ Arms strong enough to instantly crush rock? Yes
♦ Arms strong enough to instantly crush rock quickly? No
♦ Able to cut through grass in a reasonable amount of time? No, I feel like I saw through every blade of grass individually
♦ Able to swim at an Olympic pace? No, you prefer to swim casually while me, the player, impatiently waits for you to finally swim through 3 full screens of lake water
♦ Slow motion jumps? Climbing like a turtle? (if turtles could climb) Yes and Yes

----------------------

Overall, I am enjoying the game, albeit the slow everything, though I am sure most people actually won't
6/10

*desperately cutting grass as quickly as I physically can so I can watch the dinosaurs before they move off screen*

----------------------

Also this is just me but (spoiling the ending) the game would have been a lot more interesting if it had been thought provoking in some way (I thought it was going to be given the atmosphere of the game). Usually in games with ancient gods and some sort of strange ancient Queen, you would think that the game would be a little more serious and mystical. Like Dark Soul-ish I guess. But instead, at the end your whole adventure was just a bunch of gods throwing you a housewarming party? Personally, I thought the story would have been much better without that but hey, I didn't make the game lol

A very quick little piece of art.
A very quick sad little piece of art that follows an overweight, overworked, and depressed 30 year old man's descent into a deeper and deeper depression.

What made this game was the story; the inner dialogue and conflict of Evan White (the main character), and his battle against himself.
The story is about him trying to find motivation, a reason to live, while constantly being bogged down by the same things that drag us all down.

It's vivid, straight to the point, heart-wrenching, and most importantly it's so so realistic.

I'm not a 30 year old guy, living alone, working myself to death.
I'm a 20 year old girl, living in a dorm, working part time, but I can still heavily relate to the way Evan deals (or more like doesn't/can't deal) with his problems, and working out my problems through talking to a therapist I made up is something I really have done to try to cope lmfao

Honestly, just an enlightening game about the realities of depression and feeling completely alone.
