A really super good game. Puzzles, writing, graphics, visual design, sound, music all work together in a way that is rare.
Extremely ambitious, fleshed out, as good as Portal 2 for sure and way bigger in scope.
Props to Croteam for making this, best game I've played in a while.

The gun play (which is what we're here for) is great and each encounter/weapon is very polished and fun and I'd recommend the game for that. The visuals/monster design are top notch, particularly the game play feedback of demons visually taking damage works very well.

But I can't help but feel like there were missed opportunities here, if you're going have the story be demons invade Earth then why not set the levels in some recognisable locations, or at least more varied locations rather than nondescript ruined cityscapes, charnel houses, lava pits and ancient temples in some other dimension. Overall I think the environmental design is constrained by the story beats and it could have used more interesting Earth-based locales and set pieces to go with the game play.

For a game so obsessed with viscera it curiously avoids violence toward a human on screen, which robs it of some stakes. NPC's only appear in one well done cut scene, the game could have used more of this rather than the ponderous story that it has about ancient races/macguffins and other Diablo-esc "lore". It briefly flirts with the idea of audio logs in one level then forgets about it, though I don't think this would have been a great fit either for the whole game. But a globe-trotting story about the inhabitants and invasion of Earth happening in real time rather than mopping up after the fact would be more interesting. There's great opportunities for humour and violent slapstick but it never shows up, it's played straight without laughs which seems like a strange choice in such an arcadey game.

All in all, fun but could have been better.

The best game you can play one handed while eating an ice block (or several, one after the other).
