Early Access Review
I realllllly want to like this game. It's vibe and artistic flair are what drew me to it, and the bits of narrative ive seen ive really enjoyed. I love the parts of the game where i feel like im striking out into this unknown world on an adventure, and when it works it works really well. The opening of the game up until you reach the Sacrament and beyond are wonderful. But I've had real trouble engaging with the repeatable dungeon aspect of the game along with a myriad of other things. What interested when i initially watched promo content was that i would be playing a game like Diablo and Elden Ring and sometimes i feel like i am. But most of the time i dont win fights through merit of my own ability like in Elden Ring. I win because the enemies can be exploited so easily. I've settled into a play style with daggers and bows and i spend most of my time chipping down foes from afar who are to confused to do anything about it. When i lose i feel like so much of the game is working against me in a frustrating way. I've died a ton from falling to my death which is fine in the overworld but in the dungeons can be really deflating. Especially when it looked like a simple jump to a ledge. The camera angle can make upcoming dangers impossible to predict unless you move at snails pace, and sometimes elevated enemies are untargetable. There's real potential for greatness here, it just hasnt arrived yet.

Just what modern gaming needed, a simple, stream lined xcom game all the difficulty options you need to make every move matter, every mistake hurt and every squad death make you rip a chunk of your hair out.

An explanation of the game would take away from the experience. All I'm willing to say is if you're looking for a head ♥♥♥♥ of a game, this is the short but sweet one for you.

An incredibly atmospheric survival stealth game that just misses out on greatness because of the trial and error nature of some sections of the game. The horror comes between the action and i found myself wincing while opening doors, crawling around every corner and yelling the house down at some well delivered jump scares. Outlast proves that the survival horror genre is alive and kicking when the right people are at the helm of game design. 8/10.
