The guys at Degica thought they could make "The VN RPG Maker", but no. Even basic stuff is absent. Basic "go back to title screen"? Absent. Choice box positioning relative to screen size? Absent. People are blaming RPG Maker because of its flaws, but I'll say it once again: in front of VN Maker, it shines.
Template is a problem? If you're serious about game making, you hire a UI designer. That's what I did. So no, it's not a problem. It's a problem for people wanting to make games as a hobby, not to sell them.
So yeah, the criticism is fair but I believe the OP started with the wrong mindset.
I am considering to buy VNM (I honestly don't care about price because 60 bucks doesnt mean much) but seeing some downside I am in awe.
I dont have much time either and I work alone.
This is for my essay though. So as long it's logical and passable with decent visual I am all in.
Also I am an artist and also a programmer, while my logic is least somehow okay.
I need Ren'py least to be able doing some quick User Interface modification, templates, basic VN features such as skip, quick save/load, save and load, basic options, image scaling (I am working with pixel art), and not complicated but branching routes.
If I can't master it within less than 1 month, I do be fked.
(Do note I self learn pretty quick but without any good example or media, my brain will lags alot)
I saw some decent stuff on Ren'py Youtube it seems the engine does have alot of community built in which is the exact opposite of VNM.
