Wartales:
~~~~~~~
It has been over a century since the Edoran Empire fell to a devastating plague that struck the country. The people who pulled through this terrible event had to rely on themselves to survive. But where there was no longer any authority to hold the nation together and keep it safe, groups started to form all over the country. Different factions now control parts of the old Edoran Empire, and the country remains very dangerous as the countryside is full of bandits, deserters and mercenary groups. Speaking of which, why don't you create your own mercenary group and travel the epic medieval world in research of fame and glory, in Wartales?
Wartales is a party-based RPG with turn-based combat game developed and self-published by Shiro Unlimited on the 12th of April 2023 on the Steam platform.
It has been quite some time since I have been sucked into a game like I have been with Wartales. There is so much to this game, and after having played for over 88 hours and not yet finished, I am ready to put my thoughts onto paper. Let's put the cards on the table right away . . . this game is absolutely brilliant! But you must take baby steps all the way through. That's right; there is a lot of grinding here. After all, there is a lot to be aware in order to successfully manage a group of mercenaries. You need to pay them well and on time to make them happy, feed them well with different types of food and drinks, and make sure to have entertainment and adventure with plenty of fights.
But before all that, you'll need to set the tune of your playthrough. As you launch the game, you'll have to choose your companion's destiny through a set of three cards, each containing five options. After that, you must select how you want to explore the world from two possibilities. You can choose to explore progressively, where you can explore all five regions, and the enemy you'll face will progressively become more difficult, but it will match how you progress with your own group in terms of numbers of characters and their abilities. Or you can choose to explore the world with locked regions, and therefore you'll need to grow your group and strength to be able to survive exploring the next unlocked region. And, of course, the Survival and Combat difficulty, as well as the saving limitations.
You basically start the game with four mercenaries and a pony. Ponies are really important in this game because they can carry more goods as a unit. Mercenaries can each carry a small amount of goods, but it is minimal compared to the ponies and other animals, such as bears, boars and wolves, that you might capture as you progress through the game.
You can access the world map anytime by pressing your keyboard's "M" button. At first, you won't see much of the world because you need to explore it, so most of the map will be black. And, of course, the more you move and discover, the more the map will take shape. I like the scenery in this game, as you walk through valleys, plains, and mountains and as well as entering mines. Each region has plenty of resources to pick up, such as wood, plants, iron etc. And these resources will regenerate every few days. In regard to food, you can purchase food at the local markets, or go fishing, or even fight with wild animals, such as groups of boars, wolves and bears.
Each of the first three regions will have 30 missions to complete, and as I am still discovering the last three regions, I can’t say how many missions they will have. Half of the missions within each region will be stand-alone, while the other half will be part of a scenario that you have to finish to receive a free boarding pass. The boarding pass will grant you access to another region without payment. You can still pay the specific number of krowns (game currency) to access another region, but make sure you have plenty of fighters in your group before doing so. You'll understand why when you play this game.
Each region will have locations you'll have to visit as part of the missions, and you'll also have a couple of villages where you can buy and sell all sorts of goods and food, as well as craft weapons and potions, get some rest or pick up contracts at the inn to regenerate income. You can recruit more fighters at the inns; be sure to check how much it will cost you upfront as well as the cost of ongoing character wages you'll need to pay every week. As mentioned above, your party must rest and get a good feed every few days, so if you manage to complete your contracts, you can return to one of these villages to pick up your krowns (money), accept new contracts, and rest your party for a fee. But that would be too easy! In fact, you'll be camping most of the time. And this is another great part of the game. At first, you'll only have a campfire, but as you play the game and gain more knowledge, you will be able to upgrade your camp with a tent, a pot for cooking, a workbench, a strategy table, an outdoor stable, a tanning rack, a gurney and more.
Knowledge is learned in three different ways. The first one is through the paths. There are four paths with nine levels each: Power and Glory, Trade and Craftsmanship, Crime and Chaos, Mysteries and Wisdom. Each of these paths has 14 challenges and every challenge has specific tasks. For example, in the Crime and Chaos path, you have the Pickpocket challenge, where you have to steal 1000 krowns worth of items. You receive between one to four knowledge points when you complete a task. As you claim your points, they will go towards a points bar, and as soon as you accumulate enough points, you'll unlock the next level and receive bonuses, recipes and other goodies, and be able to build new pieces of equipment at the camp. The second option for gaining knowledge is from experience points based on your characters’ professions. There are ten different professions that you can allocate to any of your characters; they can become cooks, miners, thieves, woodcutters, bards, alchemists, blacksmiths, scholars, tinkerers and anglers. Cooks and alchemists, for example, will mostly (but not always) gain experience they create a dishes or potions ...
Positives:
~~~~~~~

+ Fabulous graphics
+ Plenty of missions throughout the regions
+ Plenty of character customisations
+ Fun to play and extremely addictive
+ Probably over 100+ hours of game time
+ Battle interface easy to use
+ Has survival and economic aspects
+ Stack of achievements

Negatives:
~~~~~~~~
- A few drop rates every now and then
- No trading cards as yet
Wartales is an extremely well-thought-out party-based RPG. The combat interface is great; finishing it will take at least 100+ hours! Beware, it is highly addictive.
9/10
