Astlibra is a unique experience.

I went in expecting the game to be mediocre due to the trailers showing overly complex designs for the characters and back grounds. But putting that aside, I decided to give it a honest try.

It felt like I was a kid again as silly as that sounds, playing games like Maplestory, running around mindlessly mowing down hoards of monsters for the sake of wanting to level up and farm materials for quests / weapon crafting. The story is pretty predictable, as in if you know something the characters do not you have to force them to do what you know you shouldn't, if that makes sense.

The story is good regardless, but the desire to want to actually go out and farm materials from monsters and minerals is just as good. I spent 2 hours in the demo area alone just unlocking everything and having fun and another 4+ hours in the lava cave, once again farming.

The proficiency system as well gives you a lot of reason to want to keep mowing down enemy after enemy along with the very fair growth system which is kind of similar to Final Fantasy XII with it's "Zodiac" system. Granting you new skills and bonuses in your overall character stats at the cost of grains from your enemies. If you can't afford lets say 5 green, you can use 15 of another colour to grow without having to search for those specific types of monster drops.

The issue with Boss HP scaling comes with the difficulty setting. Monsters will gain a lot more damage to you, while also having a lot more health. Easy mode has most bosses and the very first boss you encounter at level 7-9 (unless you power farm) with about 9k health which takes forever, but it's fine cause you take like no damage, however, the harder boss fights have over 20k while being able to one shot you if you haven't been power-leveling or doing proper hit and run tactics.

My personal opinion?
I rarely get this attached to video games, the last time I was this invested in a story was when I was playing through Divinity Original Sin II. Lost in thought and the world I was exploring.

Try the Demo.

It's very short and doesn't offer to much, but it will at the very least help you understand what the game is all about.

It can be a little bit confusing at first, but it's honestly really fun. The combat isn't perfect, but it's a Hack & Slash! Run in, mow down enemies and bosses, farm the materials and get some new gear, unlock new skills and weapons to take on bigger foes and challenges.

The game was developed by a solo Japanese developer for over 14 years. KEIZO has a daily job and only worked on the game after he got back home. You know it's not easily to develop a video game on your own especially over 14 years of development. However, with the help of prolific artist Shigatake (Dragon’s Crown) and Haku Tatsufuchi (Magic: The Gathering), and Publisher WhisperGames, the game has got a "Revision" upgrade, which you see here today.

Stay and pay attention to the story, it might have it's translation errors here and there, but outside of that, it's pretty solid. It definitely makes me want to play it, not for any other reason than it's good and nostalgic.

EDIT:

It keeps getting BETTER and BETTER the more I play this game. The time travel, the plot, the story, the characters. My god.

Hi!

Thank you so much for the review! We know that there might be errors in the English version. We aim to correct them all. If it is not too much trouble, it'd be great if you could report the errors in the English feedback thread, so that we could collect the feedbacks and fix the errors. :)
