A remarkable improvement over the first game, with simplistic but satisfying gunplay.

First things first:
The fact people complain about the gore in this game, which are also more than likely the same type of people who shill Brutal Doom, or any of the new Doom titles is honestly quite ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous is the people who actively look at this content and get genuinely upset over it, despite it not being their thing. Look, I get it. You'd be a complete sociopath not to be even slightly put off by it, but at the same time I'm pretty sure this was a deliberate choice by the developer in the first place. If anything, seeing gore in a shooter is something you'd expect to begin with, and I'm tired of people acting like it shouldn't be. But it is nice to see people getting filtered, that's always nice.

Gameplay loop is more or less the same as the first, but it does expand more in the gameplay options department. One being a magazine system (which can be lost if careless), and manually cycling the action on firearms, such as the lever action rifle, pump shotgun, and a bolt action anti-material rifle, but it is also required on an empty chamber. Think Hideous Destructor mod for Doom, but a lot more lower scale, and without the need to become salty in the process.

Level design is much more fleshed out compared to its predecessor, still has a bit of the same blue colored structures and such, but there's more open ended levels as well as more variety to them as well, one such level has you hopping from traincar to traincar, another example is you navigating through an underwater maze while searching for some power sources to destroy.

Doekuramori should most definitely continue on with this series if he so chooses. Never, never, never bend the knee to a vocal minority of people who will never play your game, man. Keep up the good work.

Was fine with this until you're required to make a PSN account. Yeah, nah I'm good, chief. Looks like its Starship Troopers Extermination's time in the spotlight now.

Early Access Review
This game triggers my thalassophobia that I didn't know I had. Probably the only game to my knowledge that actually does this to me, for that reason alone, I recommend this. If I have to suffer, then so do y'all.

The components for a great game are here, it's just needs some ironing out.

As of now, I don't recommend this game. I may update this review once a definitive optimization overhaul happens, or not.

I really , really, really didn't wanna write a negative review, but I feel I need to say that this game is just a mess. Not really functionally, but technical wise. The gameplay is fun, fast paced (depends if you're playing Hardcore), yet tactical. The main problems I have with this game is the optimization problems it's been having since the days of the Closed Alpha (I haven't played it much due to said issues), things seemed to have gotten better in the two Beta phases they had, but then performance has seemed to have gotten worse on its final release.

Which looks to be a common theme I've noticed. Whenever they make a performance update that actually makes it better, it seems to go worse in the next update. At least that's what I have been experiencing. Now that's out of the way, the gameplay and community is pretty damn solid and helpful.

However, it seems more arcadey than Insurgency 2, for example, I feel the gun play in the previous title was more satisfying, and "realistic", given the fact it seemed like semi auto was much more encouraged for most engagements. (How I did it anyway.) For example, you could drop an enemy with a single shot to the torso with an M16A4 with AP rounds. In Sandstorm it's practically one full burst to drop a single enemy. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course, I just feel the weapons in the original was more satisfying to use at the time.

Some small gripe I got is that I feel the progression system also needs to be overhauled as well. Can't really come up with a decent concept of how it could be different, but I'm sure the devs can work with the community on this one.

It's not a bad game, far from it. It just needs work, quite a bit of it if I'm brutally honest. I've been playing this since the closed alpha, I'd definitely love to see this game be better, and more content rich than the original.

DISCLAIMER: THIS GAME TAKES A BIT OF WORK TO RUN PROPERLY AND THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Brief overview:
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is the first game in the Jedi Knight series. Taking place several years after the events of Dark Forces I. Albeit being non canon as of now, Dark Forces II chronologically take place one year after the Battle of Endor. I remember having fond memories if this game when I was younger, about five or six years old when I played this game for the first time. The game itself is very enjoyable, but a common complaint is that the level design can be confusing at times, it is easy to pick up the trail again though, usually by taking a second look at certain things in the level. But that's definitely not anything to take away from the overall experience.

Summary of the first few minutes
You play as Kyle Katarn, an Imperial Officer turned Rebel mercenary, strung up in a bar at a city of Nar Shadda, viewing a recording of his father, remarking how proud he was of Kyle after graduating from the Imperial Academy. It ends when to be held up by a droid named 8t88 and some thugs he hired, Kyle asks 88 for information, as he desired to know who murdered his father. The droid tells Kyle that it was the Dark Jedi known as Jerec, mentions how he has great plans for the rebirth of the Galactic Empire, before 88 tells his goons to waste Kyle, he soons shows Kyle a mysterious disk, asking what he knows about it, so his men won't "indulge their darker side". Kyle, having no knowledge about it remarks he's been to the Dark side. 88 soon walks away, concluding his business. You'll just have to play the game to find out what happens next.

The weapons
Aww yeah, the good stuff. There's a pretty nice variety of them, ranging from blasters, to rail detonators, to concussion rifles, to lightsabers.

Bryar Pistol Kyle's personal blaster pistol, not particually powerful. But it is more accurate for long range shooting. Uses Energy Cells.

BlasTech E-11 Carbine/"Stormtrooper Rifle" One of the more common weapon found, especially early in the game, commonly used by Gran thugs and later, normal Stormtroopers and ones with orange shoulder pauldrons. It appears to be somewhat more powerful than the Bryar, but it fires much faster, but at the cost of being much less accurate at long ranges. Also uses Energy Cells.

Wookiee Bowcaster Ah yes, Chewbacca's personal weapon of choice. More accurate and much more poweful than the Bryar and E-11, it is used by some Tusken thugs. It can be charged up to fire multiple bolts at once, similar to that of a shotgun. Uses Power Cells.

Thermal Detonators The equivalent to hand grenades, can be very helpful in certain situations. Useful for taking out grouped up enemies.

Imperial Repeater Rifle More or less a direct upgrade to the E-11, fires much faster, a bit weaker in terms of firepower, but it's makes up for it in accuracy, as its bolts fire in a straight line. It has an alt fire where it fires three bolts at once in a triangle formation. It's always used by Stormtroopers with red shoulder pauldrons. Also uses Power Cells.

Rail Detonator This one is fun to use, the game's equivalent of a rocket launcher. Primary fires launches a projectile that explodes on contact, alt fire makes the projectile stick to something, or someone and detonates over time. It's always used by Stormtroopers with yellow shoulder pauldrons. Uses Rail Charges.

Concussion Rifle This one is also another fun weapon to use, more or less a rail gun that packs a mighty punch and kicks really hard, to the point where it knocks Kyle back a bit. Much different compared to it's previous incarnation seen in Dark Forces I. It fires a solid bolt, with a large blast radius causing heavy damage to anyone unfortunate enough to get caught in it. Alt fire is a non-explosive shot that acts like a traditional rail gun. Again, also uses Power Cells.

Sequencer Charges Basic explosive charge, handy for choke points. I didn't use it as much though.

Lightsaber The weapon of the Jedi and Sith alike. A very powerful weapon, capable of deflecting blaster bolts and can kill most enemies in just a single strike.

The Enemies to Shoot At

Gran thug Common enemies, usually equipped with an E-11, their fists, or thermal detonators. Easy to dispatch.

Rodian thug Oh hey, it's Greedo. Oh wait. These guys are somewhat more uncommon, only armed with a blaster pistol and deal minimal damage, they're just as easy to dispatch.

Tusken mercenary These guys eventually replace the Gran thugs somewhat early in game. They're commonly armed with E-11s or Wookie Bowcasters. They can be dangerous in groups.

Stormtroopers The most common enemy you'll face through out the rest of the game, standard Stormtroopers and ones with orange shoulder pauldrons are armed with E-11 blasters. The difference between the two is the amount of health. There are two other variants.

"Repeater Trooper" A variant of the Stormtrooper, signified with their red shoulder pauldron, and armed with the Repeater Rifle.

"Rail Trooper" Another variant, signified with their yellow shoulder pauldron, as well as being armed with the Rail Detonator. They're the more dangerous type of trooper, if Kyle gets close to one, they'll actually whack him on the head with their weapon, dealing moderate damage.

Trandoshan mercs The guys that look like Bossk, they're the most dangerous enemy to face. As they're armed with Concussion Rifles, and have a good amount of health to boot as well. Getting close to one will also result them whacking Kyle on the head with their weapon as well.

Imperial Officers Similar to the Rodian thug, armed with a blaster pistol and very easy to dispatch.

Imperial Commandos Better than Stormtroopers, usually armed with Repeater Rifles. They have more health, due to the fact they can survive one strike from a lightsaber.

Some other cool enemies too Play the game to find out.

Conclusion
Should you play it? Well, if you're a die-hard Star Wars fan, then yes. You should, but the experience may not be pleasant for some, as the Steam version is difficult to get working properly. And those who are from the "modern" gaming era, you're probably not gonna enjoy the game as much as I did. As its lengthy level design and complex level design will probably confuse those and give up. But that's their fault for giving up, right?

Wait. What do you mean there are other factions to play as instead of the Galactic Empire?
