Early Access Review
Not Just Another Counter-Strike Clone

You heard right. In fact this game actually rather plays out differently compared to CS, is it comparable to other games? Pretty much, but think about it: is any of the games out there in the FPS market these days even nearly original? Anyone? Yeah, I thought so.

First Impressions

I can see why it has mixed reviews, but at least it's at a reasonable percentage. Either you love it or you don't, but I for one am currently enjoying it for what it is. I mean after all, this is early access title, so more content and such is subject to be added and changed in the future. This game has a bright future ahead of itself, hopefully Nexon keeps their cool and plays their cards right.

Now, I myself am not really the best player when it comes to getting kills in PVP and such, but I know how to be a team player at least. And this game easily caters to my team playing needs, each character you play as has an ability, as well as a sync skill that is greatly benificial to you and your team (if used well) and can easily turn the game around at times. It's that helpful (so far in my experience it has been.)

The weapons themselves are pretty balanced, if I must say. You only have three weapons to start with, like the Counter-Terrorist favourite: the M4A1, the German classic MP5 sub machinegun, and the Great British L118A1 sniper rifle. All of which (surprisingly enough) take a bit of skill to use. You see, unlike Counter-Strike, spraying and praying isn't really the way to go in this game. I mean yeah, it'll work sometimes, especially if you barrel stuff them. But I think you'll probably be dead before you even know they're even there. Weirdly enough, most weapons (notably the M4A1 and MP5) are capable of one clicks, then again, that's a nice way to teach players to "git gud" at aiming. Quite recently they added new weapons such as the FAMAS and the L86 LMG to the game, which is nice to know that they're still updating it unlike certain developers with their early access games.

I recommend it, especially during a sale. It's worth it (hopefully to you), trust me.

Played on Darkplaces Sourceport via Ultimate Quake patch

A DISCLAIMER
Everything you are about to read is entirely my opinion, proceed with caution. Now, before an angry mob comes and chews me out. Just hear me out, alright?

My Thoughts

I personally (as some may agree) think that Doom was a much more enjoyble experience than this. But that doesn't take away anything from Quake itself, the game is great, fast paced, definitely set the standards for the FPS games we have today, as well as introducing tricks such as b-hopping, rocket jumping, etc. Without Quake, there would be no Half-Life, without Half-Life, there'd be no Counter-Strike and so on, you get the picture. Quake was also id Software's first full fledged 3D game, everything is fully modeled. From the maps, to weapon models, and to enemies. Definitely a step up in a technical standpoint compared to Doom, kudos to John Romero and John Carmack.

I appreciate what Quake is, and what id Software was going for. A kind of gothic sci-fi shooter that's episode based, much like the style of Wolfenstien and Doom. Only except you choose your skill level, and episodes in game by walking through portals, "slipgates" to be more precise. There are 8 regular maps in each episode, again like Doom. The soundtrack however...is meh to me, it's not bad. But it's nowhere near as memorable as Doom's, the only track I remember from Quake is the menu theme, all the other tracks are just ambience that only fit when listened in game. Surprisingly enough, the soundtrack was made noneother by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. (Who happened to be a huge fan of Doom might I add), but it's just kinda strange to me how none of the other tracks really just stick to me, you know? Considering NIN puts out some really good music.

The Plot

Wait what? You can't be serious, you're not playing id's games for the story, are you? Ok, well the plot is very minimal. You're a guy named Ranger, you kill stuff, you travel to different dimensions, and you kill stuff and collect runes at the end of each episode, where small plot is given through text, again like Wolfenstein and Doom.

The Enemies You'll Face

In my experience, the enemies also seem to both lack, but at the same time have variety to them, you have the standard former humans you encounter in the beginning of each episode (a la the zombiemen and shotgun guys in Doom), then later you fight these demonic kind of enemies. Most common enemy you'll face mid to late game is the Ogre, which use a grenade launcher in one hand, and a chainsaw in the other, fairly easy to kill, just shoot at it until it's dead.

Though, the one enemy that stands out the most to me would have to be the Zombies, you think giving them the good old one-two with the super shotgun will kill them? Think again, they're a lot more resilient than you think. You'll have to launch a grenade at them, or maybe jam a rocket in their mouth to make 'em rest in pieces.

Now I know what you're thinking: "Oh, but Mr. Dude Man Guy, what about the Shambler?!" yes, yes. Calm down, I was just going to get to him, it, whatever. Basically this thing is the absolute most putrid offspring between the Arch-Vile, Cyberdemon, and maybe a bit of the Baron of Hell, it's very tanky (like the aforementioned Cyberdemon). It has an attack that is based on line of sight, as long as you break it, you should be fine. It also has a very strong melee attack, like the Baron's. Truly a challenge to take on.

Final Thoughts

Quake itself is a great game, pioneer of the FPS genre, I'd recommend this to about anyone who's willing to go back to the roots of FPS gaming (ofc Wolfenstein mainly popularized it due to its success if you want to go deeper). But seriously, it's worth the money, I'd pick it up, especially during a sale.

P.S. Easiest way to kill the shambler? Follow this very easy step shoot at it until it dies

THIS GAME CAN BE A NIGHTMARE TO GET WORKING. BUY AT YOUR OWN PERIL.

Brief overview

This game is a standalone expansion pack and sequel to Dark Forces 2. Technically making it the second game in the Jedi Knight series overall. Set 5 years after Kyle Katarn defeated Jerec in the Valley of the Jedi, now during the events of the Dark Empire trilogy of comics. The game plays just about the same as its predecessor, but there are some minor changes, such as the addition of colored lighting. It also features Mara Jade from the legendary Timothy Zahn novels, a former Emperor's Hand turned Jedi-Smuggler, as a playable character about a quarter way into the game.

Summary of the first few minutes
The player is greeted with Kyle Katarn and Mara Jade sparring with one another. Kyle congratulating Mara being able to anticipate his actions via the Force. Before they have time to celebrate, the newly formed New Republic base gets attacked by the Empire. Kyle, being the space equivalent to Jesus himself, says he'll find a way to "borrow" a transport from their visitors and handle their vessels that were cleverly disguised as asteroids. How Kyle gets to the shuttle? That'll be up to you to find out.

The Weapons

The best part of any classic FPS from the late 1990s. Given that this is an expansion pack. The weapons roster is pretty much the same, but with a few new additions to the list, such as two new weapons, with alt ammo types and attachments.

"Stormtrooper Rifle"/Scope Like it's previous incarnation. It's used by just about everyone and their mother almost. This time around, an upgrade can be found for it, a scope. Goes without saying it makes it precise and is capable of killing most enemies in just a single shot, but uses double the ammo. Alt fire makes it have an auto adjusting zoom, while the other is manual zoom. It's so good, it even gets praised by Space Jesus himself in game. Uses Energy Cells

BlastTech DL-44/BlasTech Pistol The starting weapon for when you first take control of Mara Jade, same model of blaster that Han Solo always shot first with. It's essentially a direct upgrade to the Bryar Pistol. Alt fire is capable of charging your shot, dealing significantly more damage, something that carried over to Jedi Outcast. Also uses Energy Cells.

Rail Detonator/Seeker Rails As the name says, it's an ammo upgrade you can pick up for the Rail Detonator, as its name implies, it tracks your enemies with ease. Notable with its red ammo packs that you can occasionally find. Uses Seeker Rails

Carbonite Gun A fun little novelty weapon in game, it can temporarily freeze your enemies in carbonite, leaving them open to a free hit, namely with it's alt fire, where you just whack them with the weapon. Just don't let Han Solo know about it. Uses Carbonite Cartridges.

Flash Bombs Looks visually similar to your Thermal Detonators that you're familiar with, but lined with green lights. It has its uses, being able to blind a room full of enemies for a time, as the name implies. It pretty much serves the same purpose as the Force Blinding ability.

Sequencer Charges/Manual Detonation Instead of having them be motion activated, you have the option of dropping it and setting it off, useful for clearing rooms when you're about to drop down from a vent.

The New Enemies To Shoot at

Imperial Pilots There's at least two of em, one being an AT-AT Pilot, and TIE Pilot. They somehow have more health than your average Field Troopers. But not hard to kill.

Scout Troopers Everybody's favorite speeder bike guys who crash into trees. They too also are more capable than Field Troopers, somehow being able to survive a slash from a lightsaber.

Weequay They look to be retextured Tusken Mercenaries from the previous game, but that's just more variety to the common bad guys you encounter.

Ithorian The funny hammer head alien thing you see in the Cantina in A New Hope. Another common enemy type.

More new cool enemies. Play to find out.

Conclusion

Should you play it? Despite it kind of being difficult to get running, as well as getting it stable. I'd say yes, you should. It's a great expansion to an already great game, back when they were made with love and effort. Level design is also a little bit more straight forward this time around, but it's heavily encouraged that you should try and find all the secrets.

This game is like an abusive relationship. No matter how many times you get beaten and beaten by it, you just keep coming back
because you love it.

With that being said, this game is highly unforgiving. From personal experience (so far), I'd say this is almost as unforgiving as any of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. titles. With that also being said, this is probably one of the few indie games that is actually worth buying. WOW! It's also got quite a bit of replay value as well.

You get yourself a nice, fast-paced, top-down, fun, bloody beat/shoot-'em-up with a killer soundtrack. Which I also recommend picking up. (or ya know, you could listen to them on YouTube, or extract them from the game's files. Then again, these devs deserve the money.)

NOTE: This game does NOT have a difficulty setting. Just a heads up, the game is difficult enough anyways.

Early Access Review
This game made me a Tactical Space Marine Operator in Space. 10/10

With jokes aside, I really enjoy how this game is so far. It has a ton potential, I'm confident that the game will be good, since it was in development since 2005. Uh on second thought, maybe games with long devs time don't ALWAYS turn out well. *Looks at Colonial Marines* Err-uh anyways. I'm sure this'll turn out just fine. (please forgive me for mentioning that)

The singleplayer/co-op missions are atmospheric, which I absolutely love. It's like both System Shock games, the movie Aliens, and Doom 3 had a baby. (With Alien/Aliens mainly being the inspiration for any sci-fi horror game). Your eyes and ears (mainly your ears) are the only friends you'll have in those missions. As to who or what you're fighting in the missions, well you'll have to figure that out for yourself.

The multiplayer is interesting, well. The maps are, for the most part. I love how they have day to night transitions, and weather effects. Not many games have that anymore. I like how it encourages stealth, and team work, I've been playing nothing but Conquest. And I have to say, being the last one alive and having to capture a point, (or waiting out their respawn timer) to bring back members in your team can be pretty exhilerating.

I like what I see. A highly enjoyable game, and I expect to see great things when it comes to it's final release, because this has potential.

Disregard the playtime. I was playing this through Zandronum. (Well, at the time I had 0.5 on record, now I play it through GZDoom)

In my opinion, I think this is the best installment in the Doom series. This has an end to things as it is the "final" chapter (duh) to the Doom series, it's so refreshing to play a classic FPS game once again.

What do you get in this masterpiece? Two new episodes, Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment with 32 maps each, 64 maps in total. Complete with its own custom soundtrack, a conclusion to the original Doom story. It is essentially a Doom 3, before Doom 3.

Team TNT and the Casali Brothers did an outstanding job on the maps for both episodes. If you thought that Doom 1 or Doom 2, or even the Master Levels in Doom 2 weren't challenging enough, pick this game up. It's definitely worth your money.

If you want even more of a challenge, play this on Black Metal difficulty in Brutal Doom or Ultimate Complexity (I think that's the name) difficulty on Complex Doom. You won't be disappointed.
