My biggest mistake with this was trying to do all of the side quests while I played. It took FOREVER to make any progress. Turns out, there's so much story line in the game you can level two entire jobs at the same time just doing the main story quests without a problem.

Once I realized I didn't need to do any side quests the game became a blast. The story is awesome, the mechanics are great, the amount of content in the game is staggering and the fact that I can play any class I want all while keeping my current character, costumes, Free Company association (guild) and friends is icing on an already juicy thiccc cake.
