This game doesn't predetermine so many things about your character like Fallout 3 and 4 do, you are just a courier and you can pursue the main quest if you like or just do whatever you feel.

Do be warned, this game is definitely not the most stable and may require some mods to get it running well especially an unofficial patch for example.
