The short version would be for you to get an upgraded experience from Fallout 2 and read about this one on the wikipedia or something.

So this game has a lot of fan boys... This game suffers from serious gameplay drawbacks that make it more frustrating than fun. Like seriously I think a 5 year old could have designed better math models for the hit percentages in this game. Seriously, I had VATS 87% chance to hit then shoot and miss 18 times in a row. Guess what game... that's not an 87% chance. Now if this happened once or twice, ok that's one thing, but this is a constant fight the game puts you against for no reason.

Next is the criticals... worst experience with them ever. After the first quarter of the game they will be the only enemy attack that will kill you. The normal attacks will hit you for 0 HP continuously, but then a mole rat will crit you for over 110 HP. The last boss is a perfect example of this. Him and his Super Mutants regular damage 0 HP lost, then a critical 200 HP lost. Your life will depend on a critical attack every turn of every encounter. Dreadul to a mathematical power of 50.

Then there's a mixture of feelings when it comes to the stories and plot in the game. The NPC's are pretty deep and well planned out. They offer information on the world, and allow you to see a sort of cultural element to the Wasteland. I liked this alot, and the locations you do get to visit are unique and inspiring. Yet in the end they are far to sparse to really feel connected to. Then the map... oh god the map... You will waste most of your time traveling into areas that will never lead to anywhere. Then in a moment you will realize that 80% of the map is dead, worthless space. Thanks for wasting my time game walking through desert fighting mole rats for absolutely nothing.

These combinations of bad gameplay make this a terrible game, but a great story. That's why I recommend reading on this one then moving to the second one. Nearly all of the problems in gameplay this faces are rectified in the second. Making Fallout 2 a much better choice for your money.
