11/8/2023: Temporarily changed review to Not Recommended.

Samurai Gunn 2 is an amazing game that I have spent hundreds of hours on. I love the fast paced and smoothly flowing action, the simple yet difficult to master gameplay, the exhilarating feeling of chaining several sword flings into a kill, and so much more. But no matter how good a game is, none of it matters if you can't actually play the game. Which brings us to the game's biggest flaw and the reason why I can no longer recommend it:

The game is irrevocably, undeniably, very very dead.

The single player content in the game is currently unfinished and is fairly barebones. Everything can be cleared in less than an hour, which means the main draw of the game is pretty much just the online Versus mode. This, unfortunately, doesn't quite work as attempting to find a match is extremely difficult. Often you'll find yourself afking in the queue for ridiculous amounts of time just to find a game because there simply isn't anyone playing (I've waited an entire hour for no matches several times before). If you take a look at SteamDB, you'll find that Samurai Gunn 2 frequently has two or less players and even the spikes almost always are still in the single digit range. Even when the game has more than a few players, it is still not reliable as you can't be sure how many of that already small number is actually in the queue and not already playing with another player or doing something else.

To make matters worse, the game allows you to continuously rematch a player after a match. This would normally be fine, but the tiny player base means any players that find a match will pretty much always just rematch each other until they become tired and quit, causing any unlucky players in queue to miss out on a potential match. It also does not help that there is no way to know if there are any games going on at all, which makes it feel as if there is no one playing even if there are players in the game.

In the past, the Discord server was able to somewhat mitigate this issue as you could ping other users in the server to find a match. However, even the Discord has slowly become inactive, which makes it even more difficult to find a match. Even if you do manage to find someone willing to play, it tends to be the same few players all the time, which becomes less interesting as time goes on (no offense to those players, however).

As much as I want to recommend it (the actual gameplay is still very good), the completely dead player base makes the game nearly unplayable if you're not willing to wait for a long time or happen to be very lucky. If you're planning to get the game, I would only recommend getting it if it's on sale, if you're playing with friends, or if you're fine with waiting long queue times. Otherwise I recommend waiting until a major update releases, whenever that is, as many players tend to return around then. Once the game becomes semi-active again, I'll change the review once more. Until that happens, however, I would not recommend spending $15 on a game that you can barely play.

Just to show an example, I've waited for a match while rewriting this review.[i.imgur.com] I am still waiting and have not found a single match at the time.

It's fast, it's simple, and it looks and sounds amazing. Do you really need anything else?
