I got this game for free a long time ago, a friend bought me the dlc for my birthday (? can't remember) and I played some multiplayer games with a couple of other people, him included. Over the years I came back to this a lot and ended up spending many hundreds of hours and tried out maybe a dozen or more mods. Each time I would sink maybe 10+ hours into a campaign over a few days or weeks. It's a fun game, and might even teach you some historical facts or two. I actually remember reading one of the civilopedia pages on particle physics(?) in the middle of the night and deciding to change my A level subject from biology to physics the next day cause it just sounded so mysterious and awe-encompassing to me. Hehe bit silly maybe I know.
Anyway I believe this game used to scratch an itch in my brain which I will now title the "resource-accumulation, consolidation and upgrading, while dominating and dunking on your AI enemies with superior chad aura(giant fleet), flashy tech (jet fighers and dinosaurs and zombies(modded)), and biblical strength (nuclear ICBMs)" itch. The occasional time where the AI could actually match you (even eclipse you) in strength on higher difficulties was also fun and newly exciting, and even nerve-racking in the beginning, giving a bit of extra spark to the game.
Give it a go, civ 6 is out as well but the mechanics are different.
