What is "Day of the Tentacle Remastered"?

It is the classical adventure "Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle" in a remastered version with higher quality and a load of Steam achievements, but also a reworked GUI.

As the game is a classical adventure, it is controlled almost entirely with the mouse. As I knew the game already and had finished it in 2011 for the first time over the course of a few days, I just rushed through the Steam version to get the achievements, so my time should not be an indicator for the time with "normal" play.

The game originally was conceived by Tim Schafer for LucasArts, which sadly was eventually bought by Disney and closed only recently. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, LucasArts was THE high quality studio for adventure games, although some competitors such as Westwood (Legend of Kyrandia) managed to make similarly great adventures in this style.

There is a comic style to the entire game, and it is comedic in nature with an underlying plot of time travel. Purple Tentacle is a purple tentacle (thanks, Captain Obvious!) who drinks industrial waste water and then aspires to conquer the world. The three anti-heroes to stop him are teenagers: A crazy girl, a nerd and their overweight friend.

The game includes its predecessor, Maniac Mansion, entirely to be accessed via an ingame computer. Following however the story of this game, Purple Tentacle becomes the leader of the world in a tentacle ridden future where humans are held as pets. With a time machine, two anti-heroes land in different stages of history, while the other one stays in the present. Arriving near a few founding fathers of the United States of America, ready to sign the Declaration of Independence, the past has to be altered to provide means in the future to fight against the tentacle oppression. Thanks to the flush technology of the time machine, almost all items can simply be sent to each time period, so the three characters can use them as they please.

As the plot advances, it becomes clear that this lovable game still is one of the best adventures of all time, deserving very well its plalce in - of course! - history.

The downside is that the voice actors don't sound very professional at too many times. In fact, if anything about this game is to be criticized, it is this point. Maybe a new set of voice actors would have improved the game, with options to switch between the voice sets, just as there are options to switch between the new and old graphics.

Recommended: For anyone who enjoys adventure games. In fact, everyone else also should try it on a good sale.
