If you learn how the game is played, it can become one of the most intellectual experiences of battling through timelines to outwit your opponent.
If any of you are aware of the visual novel scene, this game of chess is exactly what Beatrice and Battler are playing throughout the question arcs of Umineko: When they Cry.
Beatrice, the Golden witch, a experienced 5D chess player, makes moves that Battler, an experienced chess player just starting his journey into 5D chess, cannot comprehend. Witches have rules that they must follow, even in their magic, but battler does not know those rules, which is why he is bewildered when Beatrice can check his king from several boards away, even though he felt like he was winning just moments before.
I strongly recommend you listen to the Umineko soundtrack as you play this game, they fit together perfectly.
Also, read Umineko.
