Dread Delusion is a crazy thing to talk about. It might well be one the of the best games ever made in it's genre, but it is also extremely indie, and for the genre(WRPG), very short, and in places, incomplete(I'm looking at you, godsires and crystal goddess quests). I could probably write 12-15 k words on just the writing in the game, its very very good, some would say, exquisite. While there are some problems the plot is striking in quality, even if the game is a bit railroady later in the title, I blame this on the budget. Characters and zones are 11/10 best in the house. The Lore books are all of truely perfect quality and feel as though they came from multiple authors in different times. Characters are a standout in the genre as well. Graphically this game is a HEAVILY flashy 2001 game and its a style you have to enjoy already to appreciate. Animations in this game run the full gamut of amazing and kinda stock, to just bad. The game uses crazy lighting and colors to make up for this, and frankly, it works. the style of the game is very consistent and powerful. The music is somewhat limited, but the tracks composed are perfect for the settings and the gameplay around them. Sound effects are top notch and very diverse. Very crunchy sound design help build the large complex worlds you will travel in. Things can feel sparse as you get farther in the game, but overall, sound ties the room together well. Gameplay is uh, complecated to talk about. The short version is that this game is very committed to the power fantasy and choices matter core beliefs of WRPGs to a degree where you can really make the game break in half. While this undermines the writing somewhat, I really like the commitment to being able to run around the map at mach 1 and also throw insanely powerful spells and hit like a truck. the decisions are the main purpose of the gameplay loop. This isnt bad, but it makes things *too* easy, while maybe this is solved moreso on hard mode(I played on normal), the game really wants to ask you questions in different ways, and you really can solve them any way. Stats and equipment are really cool, but they tend to work kinda like disco elysium equipment, making the core skills better and kinda carrying you through checks. I'm not a huge fan of this but it's fine.
This game is legendary, make it a point to try it. 1 of the GOATS, and the main holder of the WRPG mantle. Keep Lovely Hellplace on your radar, because anything they make after this is gonna push boundries.
