PvP in this game is enabled no matter what; alliances are no exception.
Personally I find the PvP very enjoyable, even as a solo slooper in adventure mode.

When just starting out in the game, you are bound to sink sooner or later to other pirates!
You'll simply just have to learn from it all and get good along the way.

SoT is probably not for you if you won't be able to handle the game constantly keeping you on your toes amidst all the PvE content, and having you encounter and deal with other hostile players for the majority of your playtime.
