How do I feel about Arma 3?
With Arma: Reforger having been recently released, and Arma 4 on the Horizon, I felt this was a good a time as any to update my review for Arma 3.

I purchased this game all the way back in 2013. It’s incredible to sit and think that I’ve been playing Arma 3 for just over 9 years. In that time, I’ve finished High School, started working, started and finished University, moved out, met my partner, and moved in with them. In many ways, I’ve grown up with Arma 3.

In 2014, I met this group of guys who were starting an “Arma Unit”, I joined back then, and am now running that unit. 8 years of missions every single Tuesday and Thursday (save for the Holiday periods). Countless missions made and played, mods tested and used, good times had, and troubles dealt with.

At the time of writing, nearly 5000 hours in Arma 3 – and that’s not counting time spent in the tools, Blender, Substance painter, and Notepad++ followed by Visual Studio Code writing scripts that were broken or perfect. I’ve crashed my unit’s Arma server with bad code and made our FPS reliably good for many missions with good code.

We’ve had Veterans play with us, kids fresh out of high school, conducted joint operations with people, played a “Full Day” Arma mission, taken part in an Arma charity event and spent hours on public servers interacting with strangers. We’ve played WW2 missions, Vietnam missions, Sci-Fi missions, Horror missions, Modern day conflicts, near past conflicts, near future conflicts. We’ve called airstrikes, extracted wounded, executed midnight raids, manned tanks, run artillery and mortars, driven convoys, supported assaults, taken part in them, cleared mines underwater, jumped from thousands of meters up, fired shots from over a thousand meters away. This all over hundreds of campaigns, thousands of missions.

All from one game, Arma 3.

Sure, the joke is ever present: “When Arma 4”. But I think that comes from a place of longing, nothing compares to Arma 3, because there is nothing to compare to it. These hours were 5000 well spent, I might not get 5000 more in Arma 3, but I’m damn sure I’ll get them in the next one.
