This is... wow. To say this game is a breath of fresh air is an absolute UNDERSTATEMENT. I wanted to finish the main story before I reviewed this game, to give it a completely fair chance and let it speak for itself. (I actually ended up playing it twice before writing this review, sorry devs.)

First off, let's get something out of the way. It feels like an insult to even bring up pokemon, as the games do not feel like a rip-off or anything close. This is a brand new take on the genre that I had given up on, prior. This game has already found a place in my heart. If you are thinking this is just a pokemon game, I urge you to give it a shot and see for yourself.

The story drew me in. It's cute, fun and emotional at parts. All of the characters feel really 3D and had very fun dialogue with quest lines. Even some of the NPCs made me laugh with their limited dialogue! I love the game's sense of humor. All the partner characters were absolutely fantastic, I loved their designs and how much they added to the adventure. Their storylines ranged from hilarious to heartbreaking, and the optional romance was a nice touch. I won't say the story is a solid 10/10 or anything, but it was pleasant!

The battle system is engaging and very fun. Experimenting with different sticker combinations and different monsters feels really fun and refreshing! Even silly joke builds were fun as heck. Lategame stuff can make you feel like a god if you set yourself up right, but at the same time there's very few ways to feel invincible. The type matchups having different interactions instead of a 2x and 0.5x damage modifier keeps you on your toes for every battle. Also there's difficulty sliders in the options menu, so if things are too easy or too hard, you can fix it! Postgame you can start games with modifiers, like nuzlockes and random types. The replayability is high!

The monster designs are absolutely great. I was finding it hard to build a team because there were so many good options for monsters and builds. I love 90% of the designs easily, and all the others I still enjoy. 10/10 Traffikrab and Pombomb are best bois.

The music. It's a crime not to mention the music. If you haven't already, go listen to the OST. It has a very The World Ends With You vibe to it, and it fits the game so well. I can't pick a favorite. The game might as well be $30 because you're going to buy the OST anyways. Joel Baylis absolutely NAILED it and Shelby Harvey did so well with the vocals.

My conclusion? This game is made with pure love for the genre and it being only $20 feels like a crime. This is absolutely worth every cent. I highly highly recommend it, as it's already found a place in my heart.

To say this DLC improved the base game is massive understatement.

Downpour is such improvement to the base game that $14.99 USD feels like I'm actually robbing the devs. There is so much new content that I would have gladly paid double that. Absolutely banger music, gorgeous new regions, and so much new story and lore. None of it feels out of place and it perfectly fits into the world that was introduced with the original three slugcats.

Each slugcat's campaign differs greatly from each other and offer very different experiences to the original three. Several times I've been stunned important moments in their stories, from feeling a deep sense of dread to even bringing on tears. I was worried about the new slugcat friends feeling shallow, but I'm glad to say they're far from that. In a way, each one of their stories has a message and they feel like their own unique characters.

The world manages to feel even more dynamic with the changes between campaigns. Some areas completely change or are inaccessible between them, making every campaign feel even more unique while being in the same area of the world. This alone makes the replayability go up, but with the addition of Expedition mode I could easily see myself playing this game time and time again.

Nothing feels out of place and it all fits in well with the original game. If I had to have a nitpick, it's that some of the new creatures are kinda... silly? Especially The Miros Vulture? It just seems a little excessive and goofy. But none of them take me out of the game and it still holds true to its realistic ecosystem.

Bravo to the whole team for this, this has to be the best DLC I've ever seen released for a game. Definitely pick it up if you want to get lost in Rain World's cruel enviroments again.

Absolutely worth it to support the devs for such a great game, but also worth it for that one hilarious t-shirt.

Don't get me wrong, I obviously don't hate this game. I'd say it's a very fun sandbox for the price, actually. But I'd say it still feels very incomplete. Instead of seeing progress on the base game's functionality, the developers decide to release a paid DLC.

We need better progression early game. We need better ways to transport items, like an inventory system. We need better ways to repair machines.

Instead we're getting an expansion with more features. Which is fine in some ways, but I worry for the game's future if it plans to keep building onto a foundation that needs work. I don't recommend picking this game up for now unless you're fine with how it looks and feels currently. If so, it's a cheap $15 USD and not a huge loss if you dislike it. But I'm not seeing a bright future.

It all returns to nothing.
It all comes tumbling down,
Tumbling down, tumbling down!
It all returns to nothing.
I just keep letting me down,
Letting me down, letting me down!
