The game has wonderfully animated and beautifully colored pixel art. The difficulty ramps up as you go through the story campaign and the side missions. I had to lower the difficulty to beat the last 2 bosses. I also had to grind the levels over and over in order to buy the more advances weapons. You can beat all the missions in less than 10 hours but it might take you another 10 to buy all the gear if that is important to you. I think this will be a game that I will revisit at least once a year.

Remember the NES game The Goonies II? That game was nigh impossible without a map of where all the items and teleporters were. Whelp, this game is totally in the same vein and I am all for it. If this game was released in the NES era, I would have spent a couple of months of allowance on this one. I recommend keeping a journal of your adventures so you remember what rooms still have exits you haven't figured out yet because the in game map does not map everything (like teleporters).

I've gone through 3 dungeons so far. They scratch that Zelda dungeon itch in bite size pieces. Unfortunately, some of the camera work gives me motion sickness, like when you're on a moving platform, and especially during some mine cart sections. They added an optional overlay setting to ease the motion sickness but WHY does it have to be buried at the bottom of the settings menu. I just want to flip it on during minecart sections.

The gameplay, combat, feedback loops, variety, customization, etc are all on point in this game. With each mission, there will be different combinations of mission objective, ecosystem, enemies, procedurally generated map that keep things alive and seldom dull. And depending on your mood, you get to choose the intensity before you take on that mission (hazard level 2 for those lazy affternoons just mining stuff. Hazard 4 for when you want to give your heart rate...(I haven't unlocked hazard level 5 yet(too scared))). I'll add that the devs are great with communication and their road map means that there will be more of everything added. And you'll never have to pay for anything that isn't cosmetic. (I just bought all the DLC to support them. they deserve it)

Giving this a thumbs up on condition that you get it on sale. The frustration levels in this game are through the roof. Only play if you're ok with dying and restarting a lot. I have played through it twice and feel that I don't have to spend another moment in this game. When you figure out a level, it is immensely satisfying.

There are so many little details here and there that could have made this game better. For the love of all that is good and holy, why do the offscreen machine gunners have the same color lasers as everyone else? This alone probably accounts for half of my deaths and is frustrating as hell.
