I'm gay and don't care too much for anime as a whole. So, imagine my surprise when a game that describes itself as, "a booze em' up about waifus, technology, and post-dystopia life," turns out to be a game I have no problem recommending. It's cozy, has queer representation that feels genuine, and a protagonist who's relatable without being a blank slate for the player.

I just finished this game. It made me cry. I imagine it's going to keep me this way for several days. And, y'know what, that's good. Outer Wilds brings with it a melancholic catharsis. With how 2020's gone so far, I'd become convinced that I'd become an unfeeling cynic, dulled and desensitized to the world and everything in it. This game absolutely shattered that misconception. It reminded me, the hard way, that I still have a not-completely-solidified heart in me, and that some day, in an uncertain future, when I stand at the barrier of whatever comes after life, all I can really do is nod and say,
It's time to go.

Head to Bolivia with your team of elite CIA operatives, who:
- pull the slide after reloading, not knowing that they'd have another round in the chamber had they not done so
- don't speak Spanish, despite their entire operation taking place in Bolivia
- can't quite seem to figure out how bolt-action weapons work
- put their finger to their ear when not being talked to as if always waiting for a call or not liking what they're hearing in their right ear
- can't run at 60 fps on my gtx 1070
- pull the charge handle rather than slapping it on the MP5
- say they're base jumping but really divebombing the floor a story below them and dying

I can recommend this game, but only if you can buy it on sale or from a shady key site. I can say with the utmost confidence that this game is super fun, but not $60 worth of fun. Definitely pick it up if it's on sale, if you can find it from a shady key site, or if you have a good friend who is really irresponsible with their money.

What's so fun about it? The core concept of an asymmetric multiplayer game is really appealing to me in the first place, and I enjoy the small-scaledness of it. While many mutliplayer shooters opt for 12-64 players, Evolve keeps it intimate with 5, 4 of which are working together. This creates a situation where communication is essential and everyone has to work using their strengths and weaknesses. What seems to be mindless 1v4 rooty tooty point and shooty is actually a serious battle of wits.

There are a couple of "unfortunately"s that will be dealbreakers for people, and I'll explain them.
Unfortunately, the team did a really, really terrible job of explaining the DLC. Maps are free, cosmetic skins are paid, and characters are paid. Nobody got mad at the Skullgirls team for releasing their characters as paid, and I don't see why that should be the same here. (Then again, it is ridiculous for a $60 initial price point instead of a $15 one, from a major publisher at that (Then again again, Portal 2 did it as well).).

Unfortunately, people only seem to play Skrimishes, when Evacuation is where the game really shines. People opt to play the same game mode on 12 unmodified maps instead of doing a series of objective-based modes with a variety of modifiers that genuinely feels different every time its played.

One of the best, if not THE best, fighting game I've ever played.

Yes, the learning curve throws people off. Thankfully the tutorial is super-comphrehensive; I've not yet played a fighting game with a better tutorial.

The gameplay is really fluid. Since Skullgirls is so lenient with its inputs relative to other fighters, it's easier for a newcomer to get down the inputs for a basic bread n' butter combo. This leads to players exploring the mechanics of the game and how to use them to their advantage, with a minimal amount of time fumbling over buttons. The netplay is really good too, compared to other fighters thanks to GGPO.

The general artistic direction of the game is great too. Instead of pixel art or 3D models, the sprites for each of the characters is hand-drawn and animated, with a custom-made lighting engine to add a last bit of polish. The soundtrack and stages all are consistent with regards to the game's "Dark Deco" art style and, like the sprites, are beautiful (Maplecrest and Under the Bridge being my favorites in both regards).

The game is generally bug-free, and the only thing that I think people wouldn't like about it are the skill curve (which all fighting games have) and the amount of boobies and panty shots in the game (which not all fighting games have).

Overall, it feels like everyone who worked on this tried their hardest on this and treated it like their baby, and it shows.
