Dark Souls 3 is the finale of the Dark Souls trilogy and my god, what a finale it is. It represents the game’s overarching theme, that everything has an end. Despite that, it’s a game I simply cannot ever put down.

Dark Souls 3 is the culmination of the Dark Souls series. It’s an all-encompassing journey of everything you’ve learnt with as much content as they could physically pack in. Dark Souls 3 is very similar to 1 and 2 as it introduces the same grimey and gritty environments making it feel as though the world is in a state of decay. Through this environmental story-telling, it definitely shows you that the world you’ve been fighting through in the first game, the second game, up to now, is getting desperately scarce and withered. Despite this, however, the game offers plenty of stunning views and is flashy in its own right.

The engine is the best of the three games, feeling much faster in terms of combat including both player and enemy combat. This makes it so much more satisfying and enjoyable to play. The first two instalments had quite clunky and slow movement so it’s a refreshing change. That being said, enemies are a lot faster too. There are some enemies that will absolutely keep you on your toes. They may seem a little bit jank, but they’re definitely not that bad with some practice. Given that it’s Dark Souls though, I’m sure you don’t need me to explain that the game is hard sometimes.

Dark Souls 3 hits close to home if you’re a fan of the first instalment. There’s a LOT more homage to elements from that game than the second. It feels like it returns to its roots and expands on those elements drastically. This was pleasantly surprising as I’m a huge fan of the first game and was very pleased to see more. Dark Souls 2 felt like it strayed off of the main story a fair bit, so for Dark Souls 3 to go back to it and really focus on what Dark Souls started as was awesome.

Dark Souls 3 has a TON of great and iconic bosses. All incredibly rewarding and great to fight and overcome, especially the final boss. The ending of the game is brief, but to me is quite emotional as it symbolises the end of an epic journey, however, if you want another ending (by technicality) then the DLCs are for you. The DLCs for Dark Souls 3 are met with some criticism from some for being too short or too difficult, but I personally think that the DLCs are insanely good and are what FromSoftware is all about. The Ringed City DLC in particular is a beautiful and poetic send off to the trilogy that can only be truly appreciated by experiencing it.

I love Dark Souls 3, and I think it may be my favourite of the three games simply because of how absolutely great it is. Please give it a go, you won’t be disappointed.
