Early Access -arvostelu
Until recently I would have strongly recommended this game: an immersive 3D sim with procedurally generated murder cases. Great potential, but still quite flawed due to bugs and an unpolished core game loop. I'd say that's acceptable for an early access title with regular updates from a small dev team. Progress was fairly slow, but I imagine it was also technically challenging. I believe the majority who played the game where optimistic about what the game could/would become, given enough time, and it was easily the only early access title I kept following closely.

However, to everyone's surprise the devs recently announced the game will get a big content update in September, leave early access, and get a price increase. Immediately it started raining reactions from fans who where shocked and believe the game is nowhere near ready for a release 1.0. And I can only agree: unless this update magically fixes all the bugs and improves the core game loop, the reviews (currently "Very Positive") will probably drop massively and we may never see the game we had all hoped it'd become. Whether it's a need for cash, or the devs wanting to move on, it doesn't bode well.

As such, I can no longer recommend this, and would caution anyone against picking this up before the price rise.
Perhaps the devs have a big surprise up their sleeve and 1.0 will be amazing, then it will be worth the higher price, and I will obviously change my review. But let's be clear: that seems very unlikely.

Shows good potential and I really wanted to like it. But this still needs major rebalancing. However the main issue is that, despite frequent patches, it remains a buggy mess, even for an early access game. I'm tired of restarting from the beginning until another issue blocks my progress. This may eventually turn into a great game, but right now I can't recommend it.

I haven't completed the game yet, but I can already tell it's a labor of love. The bar was set high after Crimes & Punishments and The Devil's Daughter, but Frogwares doesn't fail to deliver once more. This game is lot more open world-ish and non-linear, with increased focus on story and cool cinematics and even some combat thrown in. At the same time, there is improved use of mechanics. Disguises in particular are finally seeing some good use. And the story of Sherlock's youth may not be entirely canon, it's certainly immersive, interesting and well presented.

Is there nothing negative to say ? Not entirely, cases are sometimes a bit too easy, minigames are ok but not particularly great, and there are certainly other details one could complain about, but overall the positives far outweigh any negatives.

A solid recommendation.

I've played video games for close to 40 years and I can safely say this is a contender for all time favourite. If you also consider the price, it leaves all the competition far behind. The mechanics in this game blend so perfectly together, the balance is so close to perfection, the difficulty settings are just right (although newcomers may think it's too random and hard) and there is more content than you might think (after nearly 800 hours I still occasionally run into event texts I'm sure I haven't seen before).

Gameplay involves indirectly commanding a spaceship, by issueing orders to your crew and choosing how you route energy to your different systems and subsystems. It's like you're Captain Kirk himself (or Picard or <insert name here> for younger generations). You start with 1 ship and gradually (through achievements or wins) can unlock 27 others. Playstyles can be very different between ships, and even with the same ship every run feels sufficiently different based on what you encounter. There is no perfect strategy you can apply each time, you have to work with what crosses your path and make the best of it.

If you haven't played FTL, do yourself a favor and give it a try. It's worth every penny.

Updating my review after today's update. Finally the developers have added the much needed anti-cheat system, which (so far) seems to be working fine.

There are around 25 minigames, the majority of which strike a good balance between luck and skill and are good fun. The game is at it's best when you take it lightly and party up with a few friends to have a laugh.

Events beyond your control, or a bad team in a team round, can lead to a loss though. So if you are very competitive and easily frustrated, this might not be the best game for you. Losing may not always seem fair (although it usually is).

Some minigames quickly get boring/repetitive (perfect match, rollout, block party), are somewhat broken due to lag (all the games involving tails), or are just a bad concept (jinxed). But fortunately the large majority is quite good. Reducing the frequency of the less interesting games would already go a long way to improve.

Overall, a definite recommendation, and hopefully the game will continue to improve.

This compares to Town of Salem like Champagne to the cheapest bottle of wine in your local supermarket. Some exageration aside: if you like social deduction games, this should be high up your wishlist. There is quite a bit of complexity because each class has more than 1 ability, and sometimes it's really hard to understand what's going on. This makes the learning curve a bit steep, but at the same time it does increase the replay value. UI is a bit clunky, but same goes for most SD games. As is also common in this genre, I was expecting a lot of toxic players, but surprisingly hardly encountered any in my 60h of playtime thusfar. Devs appear to be friendly, listen to community, and continue to (try and) improve the gameplay. Recommended!

I never tought any game could be capable of killing me so often in such a short timeframe, in particular a game with 1 button. I also never thought I'd ever consider repeated deaths to be fun. And here I am .... enjoying this game a lot. Whenever I'm playing something else now and might feel the urge to ragequit, I'm gonna remember this game and smile.

Guns of Icarus Alliance (GOIA) is like a new PvE expansion for Guns of Icarus Online (GOIO). Except they released it as a seperate game, but integrated GOIO, to avoid splitting the playerbase. So if you buy GOIA, it will include both the PvE and PvP elements. If you already have GOIO, you get a discount for GOIA.

GOIO was a PvP 3D airship combat game between two teams. Always 4 players on a ship, but each team could have 1-4 ships. So a battle could have 16v16 players. You walk around an airship like you walk around in an FPS-game. Except here you have no weapons to shoot, just your tools to crew the ship. There are 3 roles : pilot, gunner and engineer. In theory every role can perform any task on the ship, but obviously a gunner is better at shooting and an engineer at reparing things.

In GOIA, you can play various co-op missions against an AI director : together with friends, with random people, or even with bots. It also includes new maps, new ships, new guns. You can join a faction, and unlock ships and weapons from that faction. Factions compete for territory and resources on a world map. Gameplay is very team-based, voice chat is almost a must on harder difficulties to coordinate.

GOIO was fun, but GOIA makes it a lot better. I believe it's also easier to pick up for new players, going through the tutorials and then playing missions against AI's of increasing difficulty. That was one of the issues in GOIO, beginners ending up in battle against veteran players were having a hard time, and probably not sticking to it.

A warm recommendation if you are looking for a game to enjoy with a couple of friends.

Went back to this game after 5 years, and I still love it. If you can look past the lack of graphics, you'll find a great strategy game.

Quite likely the most underestimated game on Steam.
