Forestygian Demo Review
Forestygian is a deckbuilding game where you use different cards to support your character as he fights through a list of enemies. These include gaining mana to use abilities, adding statuses to improve various aspects of the character, and chaining effects to increase the power of everything you do.

The Crashing

This is here because I had huge issues getting the game to run. It would literally crash every minute or so. Luckily it did save the progress exactly before shutting down so there wasn’t any progress loss in the process. I couldn’t find a way to resolve the issue. My specs are a Ryzen 5 1600 and a 1050 TI with 8 GB of RAM.
This is the only reason why I can’t recommend the game at its current status.

Characters
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3368158933
Choose one of the 7 characters and fight hordes of enemies. Each one has different abilities but they all have similar aspects to them. The first ability deals small damage but hits many enemies, while the last one hits just the first enemy but deals massive damage. Other characters may have special effects as well. It’s up to you to try and test them all to find out which suits your playstyle the most.

Enemy Variety
One of the more important aspects of a deckbuilder is enemy variety and Forestygian handles it pretty well. All enemies have an ability of their own and throughout the fight, there are always at least 2 or 3 different types of enemies on screen. Their abilities range from taking double damage while at full hp (essentially trying to stop you from hitting all enemies at once) to healing for some hp each turns to increasing damage they deal for each hit taken. This concept creates a puzzle you have no solve in order to progress. Choosing when to play which card and which ability to use to deal damage or kill the enemies is crucial to clearing the stage successfully.

Game Progress
After each combat, you get to choose one of 2 upgrade paths, adding a card to your deck and some statutes. These statues can be hit an extra enemy or gain more mana with additional triggers based on the number of cards in hand, max health, or current mana. All these can add up to create insanely potent turns which will allow you to obliterate enemies in your path with ease.

Video & Audio
The game looks good. There aren’t many animations but the visual style is good, the UI is clean, and everything is visible and accessible. I especially like how you can get any information you need at a glance. How many enemies remain? Visible. How much damage is each enemy doing? What is total damage coming your way? Everything is displayed, yet the screen doesn’t feel cluttered at all.
There is not much to say about audio. It has sound effects and no music from what I could tell. The sound effects are decent, but nothing spectacular, just your usual grunts.

Positives & Negatives

The Good
  • Great and Intuitive UI
  • Character and Enemy variety
  • Fun to play when it works

The Bad
  • The Crashes – can’t stress this enough
  • Could use some animations
  • No card draw increase

Rating: 2/10
In its current state the rating is 2/10, but with some updates and when it works it can become a solid 6 or even a 7/10.

Have to clarify.

The review says: "It would literally crash every minute or so." Which for me sounds like: you play the game normally for a minute or so, and then it crashes.

But in the comments of the review, it was revealed that the game shows a crush popup immediately on start. A quote: "It pops up immediately as I start the game. If I click ok, it shuts down, if I ignore it, I get to play for a bit before the game eventually shuts down itself."

This is very different from crashing randomly. Essentially, the engine detects that it can't run the game correctly on that computer, and so it shows the popup. And if the game was not closed through the popup, then the engine closes it by timeout (here is the "minute or so").

This type of issues often happen when there's something wrong with software on the computer where it's crashing. Such as missing libraries or outdated drivers. I checked the installation settings of the game, it does install necessary VC++ Redistributabes and DirectX. Other dependencies is not what Steam installation manages.

To conclude, no one else reported this or similar issue yet. And the demo is now same version as the full game. So, if you start the demo and it doesn't show the popup, then, most likely, you won't have this issue.

Regards,
Sergii, developer of the game.

Hello there @Svargas

Finally got around to testing the demo and the new released version. Both show the same prompt and are unplayable.

Regarding your situation, i can understand that it might not be random, but as it stands, it is unplayable for me. Your explanation is valid and my view might have been skewed because different battles took different times to complete (turns, cards). I will add a note about it. Let me know if you need anything else.

Logs folder is still empty.

Thank you for everything.
