Early Access Review
(Updated 2019 Review)

After playing this game for about 3 years, there's a lot I can say about it. If you get hooked, it's a major timesink, especially if you have a few more friends to play with. Hi-Rez have been working hard to squash out all the bugs, but there are still a few that make it through somehow. Fixing old bugs sometimes creates new bugs in game, and while the results can often be pretty hilarious, it's annoying when it happens during ranked matches. If you're a new player, you're in for a good time, but for most old players the novelty has sort of worn off already. Yet we still keep coming back, don't we :3 The worst thing I can think of about this game is that a lot of the player base consists of toxic, selfish beings who only know how to blame everyone for everything - except for themselves, of course. These beings tend to pick Viktor or Vivian and play this game like they're playing Counter Strike.

This game isn't Counter Strike.

What it is, is a fun, fast paced Hero Shooter where all the champions have their own strengths, weaknesses and thus their own roles to play. These roles aren't exactly set in stone - for example, support champions aren't good at just healing their allies; Ying, while being an excellent healer, is also very good at dealing damage, while Pip can flank the enemy from the sides about as well as he can heal his teammates. However everyone does have a primary role and fulfilling these roles properly is the best way to help win a match. There are four classes of characters - Frontliners, which are tanks with high defense, survivability, and shield abilities, Supports, all of whom have a healing ability, Damagers, who are good at dealing out consistent damage outputs, and Flankers, who have high mobility and attack power. You can also customize your champions based on how you want to play them with Skill Card loadouts, which either give bonuses to certain abilites or give you a buff of some sort.

I've already said what I think the worst thing about the game is, but I can't decide what the best thing about it is. Is it the sheer enjoyment you can get when you're playing with chill people who're on the same page as you? That feeling of exhilaration when you manage to win the match at the last possible second? The varied, colourful champions, each with their own unique skills and playstyles? The regular updates by the developers to add new content or balance out whatever needs balancing? Their prompt responses to any questions you might have about the game and their attentiveness to the community? The Easter Eggs and the LoTR references? The fact that such a well made game is actually free to play? Or the numerous friendships one might build up over time while playing with some random people and lucking out? I can't decide. All I'll say is give it a try and see if you can decide for yourself.
