Nine Sols has a perfect combat system.

It does not have a perfect world, it doesn't have perfect writing, it doesn't have perfect characters, and it doesn't have perfect progression.

But every fight, every boss, ever little section of combat is perfection. And I say this without a hint of exaggeration at all.

And all of that is elevated by a grand, emotional story, a beautiful score, ties to an unfamiliar mythology that most games are unable to tackle, good visuals, and honest to god some of the most endearing and deep characters in any video game ever.

If I could compare this with its most famous contemporary, Nine Sols triumphs Hollow Knight in the dimensions of combat, character engagement, and story. While HK fans will find exploration, atmosphere, and freedom of movement lacking, the difficulty also gets quite intense.

Play this game, you will not regret it, but it is difficult.

It's not that hard of a game once you get the resource management of it down. It takes a while, maybe 20 something hours + a guy in a video to point it out to my dumb ass but when you get it down to a rhythm it's great. Not that it's terribly easy when you get it down, it's just you know a lot more and are prepared to deal with threats even when you've not necessarily dealt with them yet. The modding scene is incredibly robust and has had a lot of time to develop and you can customize the game to your heart's desire honestly, if you like RPGs and a rewarding learning curve, get this game. Pretty good without the dlcs too, but there are features you'll miss out on that are pretty cool like the districts.

Play this game with mods and you'll have the time of your life. It's as close as you're gonna get to a game with a story that makes itself really, manage against random odds, fight raiders, travel around and deal with whatever comes your way. The vanilla base game is great too but you'll want mods to add onto the already great story generation and modify the game to your wishes, either if you're the kind that slobbers at the delicious drama that occurs between colonists and nature, colonists and enemies, and colonists and their own kin. Or if you're me, modify the game to create intricate bases with colonists so comfortable the thought of moving away isn't even considered, with structures that facilitate even bigger and bigger and bigger construction projects.

There are 3 base game storytellers to choose from, Cassandra Classic, Phoebe Chillax, and Randy: the only storyteller worth your time after you die at the hands of the other two. I'm of the firm opinion Randy is the way the game is meant to be played and the stories he can craft are some of the best, from nuclear fallout followed by poison ships, to ambrosia blooming only minutes before a mechanoid raid, the stories are random and they are enjoyable.

All in all this game is an amazing timesink that teaches you how to hate Robots, Randy, Raiders, Raving and Rabid Alphabeavers, all on your own Rimworld chock full of incompetent Colonists with worm IQ.

9/10

I have 900+ hours on this game and I have only 59 achievements. For ♥♥♥♥'s sake if that doesn't scream replayability then nothing will.

Rarely have I ever come across a game that so perfectly melds the balance between Casual and Dedicated gameplay.

I'm just gonna say it now, this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ easy.

Like, really, really easy.

The AI are dumb as bricks and playing on difficulties lower than prince, and prince arguably, is pretty much a guaranteed win no matter what your victory type. And this makes it very good for simple casual gameplay, just jump in and play a bit then win then feel good. But once you start hitting King and higher though...

And the AI's still dumb.

Yeah, the AI's still dumb as bricks. But now they've got bonuses so things get a little iffy for your guaranteed victories, at this point it stops being a game of breeze-through and more like a game of chess. With each game having less and less on your board and more and more pieces on the enemy's.

Granted, a really, really dumb enemy.

And this is where the competetive side comes in. The game suddenly becomes a test against seemingly overwhelming odds now, a test of survival, a test of out thinking the enemy (Which is pretty much how you win immortal and above). Suddenly, you start losing some stuff. Tactics start to form, things that seemed like no brainers at the start are now held off till later because of how detrimental they may be at the start. Worker>Scout>Monument becomes Scout>Worker>Monument, or Scout>Monument>Shrine depending on start.

Once the heat starts coming, you start thinking. And that's great.

Don't buy the game without DLCs though, it's trash. Really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ trash without GnK or BNW.

FINAL RATING:

8/10 - Because you need DLCs to make this game fun, and Mods to make this game a challenge.

Also I have 100+ hours or so in this and I'm still terrible at this game.

Frantic, Panicky, Incredibly difficult and unendingly fun. What else do I have to say to make you play the game... Oh, and did I mention it's a rougelike bullet hell RPG aswell.
