This game is largely unplayable. I thoroughly enjoyed the original Subnautica, but this is a large step backwards. There is no auto-save function. There is no quick-save function. You cannot set a hot-key as a quick-save or standard save. There is no Steam Cloud Save functionality.

If, like myself, you played for almost 2 hours and the game crashes, you will find that upon restarting, your progress is lost... because nowhere does the game notify you of any of the aforementioned short-comings.

There are mods that can add all of the above mentioned functions, except for the Steam Cloud Save, which is accomplished by literally lifting and adding the code from the first Subnautica game! WHY WOULD YOU TAKE THIS FUNCTION OUT!? This can't even be chalked up to a Release Date Crunch oversight. The game has been released for over 3 years now. How could you not add this functionality in when it is so simple to do so?

The only thing I'm happy about with this game is that it crashed before I hit the 2 Hour play-time mark so that I can demand a refund.

Unknown Worlds Entertainment, do better.

I really wanted to like this game, I really did. I mean, it's got great pixel graphics, the controls are tight, responsive and intuitive. The environments look amazing and the creature/attack animations are excellent. But the idea to make every mission a timed mission was definitely a bad choice.

You start each mission on a two minute timer, if you haven't finished the mission in the allotted time you're teleported back to the player hub and while yes, you get to keep the spoils from your run so you can make upgrades to your skills and gear, it's honestly just really annoying. Enemies have a chance to drop +1 second item, but if you're not close enough to pick it up as it's falling it will often cost you more time to go after it and occasionally through the level there will be a +5 second pickup to grab... but honestly it doesn't really matter.

In a "Metroidvania" style game the occasional timed element should be a tool used to heighten tension and add to the story and atmosphere of a game, not a core mechanic. It just feels like a really bad decision on the dev's part and makes the game not fun to play, in my opinion.

Despite the amazing atmosphere and gross/cool visuals and interactions in this game, I'm going to say 'Do not buy.'Clocking in at around seven total hours of gameplay, this game is not worth $40 price tag. If you can get it on sale for less that $10, sure. I guess. You're better off watching a No Mic/Cam Let's Play of it on YouTube than paying full retail for it.

Early Access Review
It's a only in Beta and it's already my favorite mining/building/exploration game. I can't tell you how many days (ok, if I bothered to look up hours played, I could) I've spent on Terraria, but since getting Starbound, I haven't bothered to log back into the it. It took everything I loved about Terraria and improved upon it, backed by a community of brilliant modders, there is never going to be an end to what you can do with this game. I'll be playing this for years to come, no doubt.
