Strike the Earth!

If this game or it's types are new to you, it's a sim, which means a lot of things are going on in the back end that you dont see the results of until a play session or world goes long. Dwarfs get hungry, so you make farms, butcheries, kitchens to feed them and make food, they're alcoholics so they drink CONSTANTLY. But also all the clothes they wear wear out as things go on, so eventually you'll be asking "why is everyone naked in the fort?" then you realize you should've been making clothes all that time for the last 10 gameplay years.

For the first time, take things one step at a time. They say "losing is fun" for a reason. So while you think you're doing a good job, something will happen that you cant account for and if you survive, you'll be looking into what to do to prevent it. You'll barely survive an attack and realize "I should've been making weapons just in case" then the next fort you take these lessons with you.

In a way, this game is a lesson in keeping level headed expectations in how things are going. You are spinning a hundred plates by the time you have 100 little alcoholics mining into the world. You're learning how THE NEXT FORT will be 10000X more awesome and better.

This game has a way of producing stories and will give you far more memorable experiences because of it. Every world creates towns, people in them, things they have, what they're doing, and what responds to their actions. You'll be surviving against not just the "environment", they dont come out of some cold storage to show up and wreak havoc or drink at your fort's tavern. It give you a sense of real depth that lacks in many prescripted games where things just exist for your interaction. It's humbling. But you're just telling dwarfs what to do. There are other games modes, including Adventure Mode that hasnt yet been added to the Steam release. I haven't played those myself so i cant comment on those.

If you still need convincing, if you look up Dwarf Fortress playthroughs on youtube you'll understand that every fort has a unique starting story as well as a history by the time they inevitably fall. This means, for someone like me, that I wont be going through the motions when playing. Every game session has been engaging.

That certainly make it worth the money for me.
