A totally fun and addicting team-based shooter for the price of absolutely nothing.

Graphics: 7/10
It’s not going to win an award in the visuals department for sure, but that’s not the point. The characters (not just the classes) are truly one of the most recognisable icons in the ‘gaming world’. Though, that means absolutely nothing when you’re focused on playing the game, so it really doesn’t matter. Everything looks “good enough”, mostly. A huge improvement from Team Fortress Classic, of course.

Storyline: 1/10
The comics don’t count. For those that need more context, click here. Now, this is because at no point in the game will there be popups you have to click to progress the “story”, there simply is none. The comics provide story context outside the game.

Soundtrack: 6/10
To be fair listening out for certain things in the game are one of the things to do to improve game sense. That’s pretty much it. The game soundtrack leaves a lot to be desired. Then again, Valve didn’t make this game to compete with the likes of [insert games that have a great soundtrack here]. And again, it’s mostly “good enough” for what the game offers.

Gameplay: 7/10
There’s a good reason to why people play this game after more than 10 years of its release. It’s not because Valve pushes updates now and then and it’s not because there aren’t other games like it. Simply saying that it’s the ‘fun factor’ that keeps people playing is an understatement. TF2 offers much more than just raw gameplay, it has its own economy for crying out loud (which I won’t cover here since it treads outside the scope of this review). But at the end of the day, it’s just a fun team-based shooter with somewhat whacky mechanics thrown into the mix. That’s TF2.

However, due to the nature of its design, it does suffer from a number of downsides including, but not limited to: Cheaters, unbalanced weapons/items, unplayed/rarely played maps, team balancing, a relatively high skill level ceiling and the usual bugs and glitches. To clarify, not all of those can be considered “bad” or “game breaking”, but some definitely cannot be fixed.

Value: 10/10
It’s free. It offers free fun for hours on end. I don’t see what there is to hate. If Premium is more of your thing, then you can buy any item in the Mann Co. Store (even the cheapest one) to upgrade.

FINAL SCORE: 62/100
