This is very much a continuation from the likes of MW4 which highlighted some good and bad of the gameplay. The graphics are amazing, but the difficulty of normal and expert were very demanding. The lack of a checkpoint system really rubbed me the wrong way because I was constantly failing difficult missions right at the end and made me restart from the very beginning.
Unfortunately having to rewatch scripted events over and over again. It also seemed the AI was very biased to target me first over my AI starmates. Inevitably I would tank the most damage and when it was time to hide behind healthier mechs, they would crumble due to not getting the maximum damage per second out. I also thought that switching between other mechs was a little immersion breaking and I felt forced to use it. I think if I had a group to play with it would have been better than the AI. Additionally, enemies would tend to always rush your star and it drove me to focusing on short range weapons which would punish me when the end boss was a vtol. I found I enjoyed the game more by setting the difficulty to story to overcome these challenges. I'm sure I could tiptoe my star around the map and skirmish more, but it seemed too annoying.

So why do I recommend? The exploration of the narrative was fun and I did like getting back into playing with my mech designs and trying out various builds. It reminded me what I liked about MW4. The story and the way the actors portrayed them was great, it felt like real Battletech cinematics like the opening movies to the old games.

In short, set down the difficulty to overcome the lack of a group and enjoy what's on offer.

Once you come up the learning curve it's a fun humanity simulator. Like the Sims but more Feudal.

I played the story for about 50 min. It took about 15 before they turn control over to you to do some fetch quests and then another 5 min of story before you even get a gun to shoot it. I woudn't recommend this game on its own merit. If you're a fan of the Far Cry series then there may be something here for you but if you were looking for a deep level of immersion maybe look elsewhere. 6/10

When was the last time you had an a moment of panic in a game? For me this involves playing the new expansion on Ironman (no loading back saves) mode (normal difficulty) and coming across missions which were not in the base game. This mission was an outright near crushing defeat and only two of my soldiers survived. My entire command structure was lost. Now going forward I've got to start over training most of my men. Couldn't recommend this game more. You can tweak it be as difficult, intense, or casual as you like.

Short version:
  1. Get too attached to your units
  2. Aliens destroy them in heavy cover with crits.
  3. Punch punch the aliens in the face with robots
10/10 Punching aliens in their smug faces.
