The core of this game is honestly fantastic. I've been through the ringer of the Civ cycle 3 times now (new game comes out, "waah old game was better!", dlc comes out, "oh em gee this is the best one!!!", new game comes out, "waah old game was better!", etc.) to know how this plays out. And to the majority of people complaining, I have to ask...were you around for VI? Because at launch it was a COMPLETELY different game from how it is now (read: worse).

The new resource system is fantastic. The Ages system, while controversial, is the closest thing we've had to a catch-up mechanic. Economy being a core win condition is great. Combat is the best it's ever been. Diplomacy is the best it's ever been. The Civilizations feel more unique and fleshed out than ever before. Building adjacencies is a smart, less restricting take on 6's Districts.

Is it perfect? Heavens no. Other than the usual suspect (cough UI), there's tons of things from VI that aren't here (the big ones being tacks and a search function), no label showing what yields you get from civics is ludicrous, no label showing what yields town specializing will get you is ludicrous, religion kinda sucks, Treasure Fleets have major issues, I could go on.

But the way I see it, you can't really fix the core, but you CAN fix the polish. This game has a super strong core, but also came out the gate REALLY unpolished. With that in mind, I have zero doubt that once the dust settles, this will be the best entry in the series. It's just gonna take a while for that polish to settle in. As is, though, the game in its current state is still more than worth the cost.

($30 for two leaders and four era-specific civilizations is lunacy, though)

Tried it for a few minutes, but the extremely cheap combat animations turned me off.

Duchess of Aquitaine, regent of two lands, patron of troubadours and judge of the court of love, ascend your throne again. Inspire the hearts of your subjects, that they will cheer you and flock to your banners, for all who know your reign know your compassion.

A fantastic story crippled by being in the wrong medium.

Okay, maybe that's too strong of a word. But fittingly enough with the game's subject material, this story is the heart of an anime trapped in the body of a visual novel. While it's great in its current form, I feel like if this was adapted into an anime, with proper direction, great voice acting, and expert musical cues, this could be one of the greatest anime series ever created.

I'm not a huge visual novel buff. I've only played through about four (though I did watch the Steins;Gate anime). This is probably one of the best stories I've ever experienced, visual novel or otherwise, but I simply believe that it would be served better in another medium.

Should that day come that this is adapted into an anime, I will be jubilant. Until then, though, this is definitely more than worth your time. The pacing is sluggish and it takes a LONG time to get good, but once it gets good...damn does it get good. The fact that I can't get it out of my head should be indicative enough of my feelings. Whatever the format, this story deserves to be experienced.

Really good game, I didn't care much for the ending.

The ability to redo choices after you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up is a really good mechanic, especially since most people (like me) would just save scum and do that anyway so this is just cutting out the middle man. That being said, I often felt like too many dialogue choices weren't clear from the snippet of text provided, a problem I see often in games where you can select dialogue. Still, a really great teen drama that has time travel involved, but I feel like while the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ near the end was executed great, the final choice felt dumb. It reminds me very much of Mass Effect 3, where the game acts like all of your choices matter, only to go "surprise, pick an ending lol". At least in this case the endings are different, but there is no happy ending; both are downers, it just depends on which one will make you less depressed. And I dunno, while the game did deal with some real ♥♥♥♥ (especially suicide), I felt like your choices should've allowed a happy ending, or at least a happier ending. It's like, I do everything right, make everyone happy, and nope, things are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up no matter what. And yes I get that the game calls you out that you're just making everyone happy to make them like you, which...in a sense is true; usually in games if we pick the "better" option to make someone happier, it's so that they'll help us out in the future. It's just the way we expect games to play out. So while I guess it was smart to call that out, it did suck that the ending was going to be a downer no matter what you did throughout the game.

While I wish the time travel powers were explained, the game wasn't really about that; it was about the life of this girl and the people around her. Until, you know, the ending. But spoilers.

I still definitely recommend it for fans of story-based games, just don't be surprised if the ending pulls the rug from under your feet.
