DISCLAIMER: I helped playtest this game, although I did buy it since Jofini deserves all the support in the world.

Firstly, this was made in RPG Maker. While that may be a downside to some, it doesn't mean much to me, especially since games like Omori use it. If we're going off combat alone, this trumps Omori in several ways. Another thing that may be obvious to most is the clear inspiration taken from undertale. This comes in the form of certain characters and themes, such as the main character being thrust into a world they are attempting to escape while befriending everyone along the way. Make no mistake however, this is not an undertale fangame.

With most RPG's, the highlight is the story. As mentioned before, it does have a bit of similarities to games like Undertale, but it's anything from a carbon copy. It's mostly hard to talk about story stuff without spoilers, so I will keep it brief.
Essentially, you travel through a gate into GateTail going after your lifelong friend, Ira. You get separated from the beginning of the game and your quest is to eventually keep going and make it to her, and escape GateTail. Along the way you meet various characters, ranging from the local monster inhabitants to other humans who traveled through the gate before you. The one thing that most of the humans have in common is that they all want you dead, eluding to some war in the past that wiped out a majority of the humans who lived there. That's the gist of it, and it does go deeper than that. There are multiple main endings to alter the story, and the main four go in wildly different directions.

How else can you express a story but through writing and dialogue, and boy does GateTail deliver. This game does not take itself serious 100% of the time. The writing is very casual and very funny at times. There will be a lot of random moments that you had no way of seeing coming. This may lead to some people pointing to the game just being "random = funny", but I'd say that take is a big of an over exaggeration. This does not mean, however, that the game is a lighthearted adventure the whole way through. ♥♥♥♥ can get serious fast, especially in the other endings you can go through. No spoilers, but some of the ending sequences genuinely gave me the chills and somewhat kept me up at night, and I'm completely desensitised to this sort of stuff.

The combat is pretty standard for your average RPG. At it's most basic, you attack, and then the enemy attacks. You have the standard complexity of doing a normal attack versus a magic attack, as well as a type chart that doesn't affect nearly as much like something that Pokemon does. What the game boils down to later on is managing three seperate bars. Your HP, MP, and TP. These all mostly coexsit, and you can't really ignore one over the other. HP is self explanitoy, and MP is as well for the most part. TP works similar to deltarune in the sense that you gain it by dealing or taking damage, as well as forfieting your turn for 25% of the bar. TP is most comonly used to recover MP mid-fight, but it is also used in a vareity of other, usually more powerful attacks. The combat also has a ton of nice QOL features, such as turning off and speeding up battle animations, and even having the game do combat for you. Doesn't stop every enemy in the game from WHOOPING YOUR ASS AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY. Newer players may be tricked by the combat's apparent simplicity, then die instantly to a funny purple dinosaur that they didn't see coming. Death is rarely a major consequence thankfully, as autosave is very good at its job. Just make sure you don't fat finger a manual save and lose that progress.

This is not a fighting sim, there are other things you do in the game like traversing the overworld and doing puzzles. This can range from your typical strength boudler puzzles to riddles to a maze with snails that teleport you back to the start if you touch them (yes it's infuriating and I love it). There are also many different minigames, most of which happen on the overworld. Theres racing, a tower defense shooter hybrid, snowboarding, and FISHING LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (that doesn't happen on the overworld lol). There are also fights in the game that happen on the overworld which is an interesting concept. One of the more notable examples is the spider queen sidequest which is quite fun. Another segment similar to that one happens as a 1v1 between two boats which was a random, welcome inclusion.
Also, a random horror segment : )
Be thankful that it's fully optional. During my first playtesting section it came out of nowhere and was genuinly scary.

Music slaps
That's it, go home.
Many of the battle themes are just more energized versions of the area themes which is a very cool touch. Motifs are very commonplace (yes like undertale shut up) between the bosses and the areas they inhabit.
There's also this one song for a random minigame later on that is just a straight up parody of the Mario Paint theme, and it's by far one of the best songs in the OST.

TLDR; If you like classic RPG's with good humor, fun minigames, compelling characters, and banger music, this is for you. A single playthrough alone takes around 8-10 hours on a first run, and for the price of $5, that's more than enough bang for your buck
