I love this game. I've been playing AoE since I was young (30M), but never had the chance to play online or competitively.

It is essentially Rock, Paper, Scissors in terms of unit types, and they all counter each other. Once you get the types down, gameplay becomes smoother, and the level of macro isn't SUPER deep. Easy to pick up, hard to master.

I recommend finding a group of people on Discord that will help teach you mechanics and order of operations.

The community can be toxic at times, I always treat that as competitive ♥♥♥♥ talk, it is in the essence of fun.
At the same time, the community can be great with custom matches and you'll always meet someone who is down to play.
