After a lengthy 9 months, Seekers of the Storm is playable and incredibly enjoyable. Since release, I really liked the inclusion of the new stages as they allow me to shape and control my experience through runs. After the revisions, the new items are great impactful inclusions and the new characters feel strong and interesting to play. I would highly recommend this expansion and the game as a whole to any casual or hardcore rouge-light enjoyer.

That being said, it's still important to remember how we got here.
This is the first developed DLC by Gearbox. On release, the game engine broke. Anybody who did or did not buy this DLC was affected. While Gearbox right away went to fix the issues and the game is now in a very playable state (on PC at least), there are still some bugs still present in the game now, such as enemies glitching through collision and being unkillable.
Not to mention the DLC itself was underwhelming. The items, riddled with bugs, hardly impacted the gameplay. One item was way too overtuned. The characters had outstanding issues. The new final boss felt unfun and unfair. It seemed like there was a misunderstanding of the flow of the game and its mechanics. The DLC needed much more time in the oven.

Even through these issues and oversights, to me it was clear the new team working on this DLC were passionate for Risk of Rain and they took the right steps in improving their product. It took more time, but the team successfully revised the weak aspects of this DLC.

Despite the initial poor reception, I'm relieved that Gearbox allowed the team to fix their mistakes and still views Risk of Rain 2 highly. The next paid expansion is on the horizon and while I'm cautious, I'm also very optimistic. I love this game and hope the team is able to make more great expansions which keeps me coming back.
