One minute it's Zelda, the next it's Bastion, the next I'm Tony Hawk-ing my way through Super Mario Galaxy. It does a lot of things and it does them really well. Just an absolute gem of a game.

Normal Portal doesn't make me nauseous. Portal with RTX does. All the surfaces jitter and vibrate subtly. Feels like everything is made of flesh or something.

TLDR
It's worth the $40 if you don't already own it. It's probably (depends on your needs) not worth the $16 (2-month launch discount for owners of the original) if you do.

For Existing Owners
Having worked in game development myself for a few years I understand why Re-Reckoning is the way it is. Console ports are anything but trivial, where as the original PC release already worked fine. What changes there are on PC are mostly under the hood. Bug fixes for non-standard aspect ratios and resolutions, UI scaling, and balance changes (including the addition of a "very hard" difficulty) are appreciated but will probably go unnoticed by the vast majority of people. Things like official mod support or 4k textures were unrealistic in the first place. As is KoA Re-Reckoning is now the best version of itself it could be and I'm happy that's the case.

For New Players
It's a blast. The game's combat and class systems in particular that stand out to me. The Fate system lets you build whatever blend of Warrior, Rogue, and Mage you want while giving you unique bonuses for various blends that make them all feel unique. You can pick any two weapons as your "primary" and "secondary" attacks allowing you to choose whether you want Short-Range/Long-Range, Light/Heavy, Single-Target/Multi-Target, or whatever combination you can come up with. I never found any skill to be useless and generally grab at least a few points in all of them.

The world is original has some really interesting features, but that doesn't prevent it from falling flat at times. The idea that the fey arn't unkillable but instead go through cycles of reincarnation, endlessly retelling and reenacting battles and adventures of their previous reincarnations was an idea I fell in love with. The multiple lorestones singing to be for a full minute about "he who had no fear" less so. It's no Mass Effect or KOTOR but it's a fun romp around fantasy land.

It runs well. I didn't have a framerate counter up but on a 120hz monitor at max video settings (except for motion blur) it felt very smooth even during large scale destruction.

It has full native Steam Controller Support. There's an action set for every class of vehicle. The UI displays the correct Steam Controller button prompts. Everything is configurable down to which button dismisses the tutorial popups and multiplayer voting. I was not expecting this and it makes me very happy. It took a little while but I managed to get the on foot combat controls working to my liking and it makes gunplay a much improved experience compared to the original.

Initially I thought the game was crashing after almost every mission. After litting it sit for a couple of minutes it turns out to just be a temporary freeze. It's unfortunate that it happens so frequently (seems like every save).

Considering the quality everywhere else and the initial discussions with devs I've seen in the forums I'm optimistic we'll see fixes.

An original and well polished turn based strategy. It's not a particularly deep game but it's a well polished one and together those traits make it very approachable and easy to recommend to anyone.

Pros
  • Approachable RPG. Health, Damage, and Move are the only stats.
  • Manually aim your skills. Shots can bounce off walls and obstacles. Sniper characters and pull off some fun trick shots.
  • Enjoyable soundtrack. I love the main theme.
  • Difficulty effects reward. This goes a long way to removing most grind from the game. Just go back to an easier level and ramp up the difficulty.
  • New Game+. Start with all characters at level 0 and keep all unlocked hats.
  • Fully rebindable controls. Even supports rebinding controllers! WHY IS THIS NOT NOT A STANDARD FEATURE IN GAMES!
  • Wonderful art style.

Cons
  • Can't get the Steamworld Dig hat. On 3DS if you have Dig installed you can unlock a free hat. I really like this hat. I own Dig on Steam. It's installed. No hat. Very disappointed.
  • Lacks and significant customization.
  • Character progression is predetermined.
  • There's a lot of overlap between the character's skills. I only actually used about five of the ten characters available.
  • With some exceptions the 'Sharpshooter' class of weapons are the only ones that get laser sights.
  • The soundtrack does not contain any of the combat or ambient music. Only the tavern songs.
  • Some of the tavern songs are ehhhhh... They do a good job setting the mood in game though.

All in all, worth the asking price. Heck, I already own it on 3DS but bought it again.

The rouge-like for people who dislike rogue-likes. Also a great game in it's own right.
The combat is akin to the more recent Batman games. Not the same level of polish, but still very good. Combat is at a moderate pace and the variety of equipment (and their effects) make combat a more thoughtful endeavor, asking you how and in what order you will deal with the steadily growing variety of opponents and their abilities.

Outside of the combat the game is somewhat of a choose-your-own-adventure game with each step being a new encounter of some sort. There's a decent variety of encounters with new ones added each successful playthrough. In some cases the ways to deal with these encounters can be equally as varied. And thankfully I've yet to see any encounters of the 'Rocks fall, everyone dies' kind. Every encounter can be dealt with potently even turning a bad encounter into a total gain. Even those based on chance have ways to tip chance in your favor. Again the lack of time limited choices allow content to be handled at your own pace.

Overall the game is almost relaxing to play. It doesn't throw any cheap shots, but it also doesn't pull any punches. That and the well versed DM that is the mysterious dealer across from you makes it a +5 game of goodness.

In it's current state it's still very playable. There are some balance issues (I HATE people with guns) but it's very stable and balanced for a game in beta. Players of Terraria will feal right at home while still feeling plesently surprised with it's many improvements and new features such as the hunger and body heat systems, dual wielding, and a flashlight (REALLY helpful).

The only glaring issues I've are found are crashes when alt-tabbing, some issues with the ammount of ore in the world (you'll spend a lot of time diging just to make one item), that better tools don't seem much better (I really don't feel any improvement going from iron tools from wood), and low level armor doesn't seem to do anything.

All in all the game runs well and is very fun. A good deal for $15.

Summary: A REALLY solid 1-4 player Co-Op top-down shooter.

Explanation:
It's free!
- Not free 2 play, those thinly veiled Skinner Boxes, but 100% free. You will never see any talk of money exchanging hands.

Mod support.
- There are not many big ones, but there are a number of good player levels.

Both easy...
- There are fairly simple console commands that add bots and tweak specific settings to make the game very easy to introduce to friends.

And hard.
- The AI director option will destroy you. Time and time again. You will face waves of Parasites while also trying to run from an army of Shieldbugs. Even the easiest difficulty can be punishing.

Custom Soundtrack
- Make a custom playlist of your own music (mp3) that the game will play at times of high action.

Custom Classes
- While not the default setting, there is a console command that lets you choose your class and pick it's stats as you desire. It's not deep, but it can let you make some specialized builds.
