A Commanders Journey
Basic premise/Story

From developer studio Bioware and published by EA. Mass Effect Legendary edition is a solid remaster of the three games with all important downloadable content. You play as Commander Shepard. Who leads a ragtag group of different alien races as they uncover the real threat during a mission gone wrong. Follow his/her journey throughout the trilogy and how the stakes continue to build further and further.

A Calibration Check?
Unique Gameplay

The gameplay of trilogy has been largely a fun ride.

I was filled with breathtaking moments throughout the whole trilogy. Missions which took my very breath away at the sheer devastation of horrifying events The game displays such a haunting effect. to experience emotionally. Anger, sadness, emptiness, bitterness, joy, laughter and more I could say, but cannot fully express the sheer totality of my feelings throughout. I literally cannot count the number of times my heart almost stopped. And to my joy and horror, I couldn’t stop playing. I was enthralled and invested to see how my crew and to an extent Shepard would end up in each entry. From heartfelt and moving conversations with companions and NPCs who you’ve known since the first and second game. And yet in the final installment of the trilogy. The culmination of everything begins and ends here.

Conversations I found the most fascinating in the trilogy. Every single character Shepard converses with, not just his main crew, but others like listening to random people in the Citadel. Feels real by listening to everyday accounts, the gossip of their day or in relation to the main plot. Every scene I came across and every random NPC I talked to were affected in all three games. From small to large and anything in between. The stakes are arisen where you least expect, you can’t hide any news about the incoming threat under the rug. And once you go deep into conversations and ask how the battles have taken a toll on their loved ones. Then you will know how devastating the major plots has transgressed. The ever-presence of fear and despair clings to this game as tightly as hope and perseverance do.

The character development and how these elements are interwoven into the plot is masterfully done. Nearly a decade later I still remember the main story beats in the past games and my lovable companions who stood by me through thick and thin. And here in the final game in the trilogy is where we see the sheer culmination of everyone’s experiences come together. Past conversations and historical moments will be referenced and reminisced fondly. Moment to moments between Commander and his crew will be strengthened and each of their stakes as each entry in the trilogy continues to heighten. Whether by a small or large impact. I felt each of my companion's struggle with my own leading the tip of the spear. Every conversation I shared with them. Both personal and not, was critical in further understanding their character and I treasured these moments greatly. Even when the plot came surging through, my companions and by extension, everyone else in the game stayed true to their character without any out-of-place texts or dialogue that would contradict them.

I would say the dialogue especially is incredibly well-tuned to give you just enough information without expelling an enormous amount of information. Where conversations give just enough information to be important to the main plots and subplots. I didn’t need to skip an endless amount of texts whenever characters spoke, since I felt it was vital to know. Even random NPC conversations like gossip were critical to understanding the current situation. This made the world feel alive and connected to the main plot currently going on and how it has affected not just your crew, but everyone you come across.

The codex or journal you have available with you at all times is a massively essential piece every player should read from time to time. Going in-depth on lore, events of the main plot. Past events. Races and their ecology, history, and more. It is organized so well, I would find myself constantly reading to fresh my knowledge of the Mass Effect universe as a whole. And it even updates as you go further in the game. It is an invaluable tool and I appreciate the time the developers took to catalog and continually update the database to inform/educate players.

The gunplay + powers you can utilize feel powerful, but not to the extent of being overpowered on normal difficulty. I still die sometimes. And lost a chunk of my health and shields. But the game doesn’t punish you too much. Felt balanced against the enemies I fought.

Lastly, I want to take the time to appreciate the last four downloadable content here for Mass Effect 3. Especially From Ashes, Omega, Leviathan, and Citadel. All of them I feel are integral to the main plot of the main game. And strengthened the lore in some cases while expanding on the crew you can recruit. The last DLC being Citadel is probably the most important and satisfying out of every DLC the series has produced and is a nice send-off with Shepard and his allies. I highly recommend every single one of them and they can be played during the main story.

Final Words for a Fantastic Remastered Trilogy
Final thoughts/Ruminations

I don’t think there’s much I could say here. Of which I already praised above. I will say I still remember quite fondly the first two entries in the trilogy. And decided to bite the bullet to play the third here in the remastered version. And coincidentally write up my final thoughts since I just finished the final game. Thankfully, I was able to import my saves from the first game and second to the third. Making it an easier transition instead of starting over. I enjoyed the hell out of my first-ever playthrough of Mass Effect 3. It's taken me nearly a decade to finally finish and yet. And yet I strongly feel the trilogy is relative today and what we could learn from it as a whole. It is an unforgettable experience I feel will stay with me as one of my all-time favorites in the RPG genre. Standing alongside the Witcher series. I cannot fully express my sheer joy and speechlessness upon finishing the last entry of the Mass Effect series and how impactful it was. The music and voice acting are stellar and work in great synergy with one another to deliver pivotal and memorable moments throughout, leaving me in awe countless times. With memorable and fascinating companions. A fictional universe filled to the brim with excellent world-building making each world you explore feel alive. Every alien you converse with has a personality and traits unique to their biology. Fleshed out in such a way that it's not copy-paste everywhere. There are grudges, prejudice, and more. But so too is their love, hope, and more. The invaluable relationships you will see forming with each entry in the series and how the final entry ends is an experience. In acquiring precious bonds I've shared with each one of my precious companions time and time again.

And finally the stories told inside. Of which I firmly believe has to be one of the most epic finales I’ve ever seen in a videogame medium. At least in the sci-fi genre for video games. And the whole trilogy is filled with many of these moments where the culmination finally hits and you can see if everything you’ve done up until now is worth it. For better or worse. Mass Effect Legendary edition is a fantastic remaster of all three games and a series I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking to dip their toes into the series.

Scores throughout the trilogy
ME 1: 8/10
ME 2: 9.75/10
ME 3: 9.5/10
