This is a long game. I'm 9 hours in and I'm about 3/4 done with the first area of... five? Six? I am really enjoying it, and I think a lot of people aren't really giving it a fair shake.

This isn't Skyrim, and it isn't trying to be. It isn't Baldur's Gate 3 either, though that is closer. Honestly, this is literally Pillars of Eternity but from the first person perspective. People trying to force the square peg into a round hole aren't really reckoning with this being a very different kind of game than the standard action-adventure RPG that Bethesda does. In fact, I'd say it is much closer to the im-sim-lite games that Arkane and Monolith (and more recently Machine Games) make.

Edit: as it turns out, there are only four areas (five if you count the "ending") which is a bit disappointing. The game is still very fun but I have basically 100%-ed it at this point so I'm a little sad.
