From when I first played it on console after my cousin gave me his Xbox 360 alongside L4D & L4D2 and many other games like GTA IV, I was already captivated by the game because of how fun it was! And when one of my friend gifted it to me on Steam back in 2015 (or 2016), I found the game even more fun to play with the Steam Workshop feature which offers many campaigns that are great if you get tired of the default ones. It is surely a great game to play by yourself, but I think it is better with friends! The only thing that I hate about it is how most players tend to me more competitive when it comes to the Versus mode since I'm pretty sure the console version community was more looking for fun rather than competition. So if you'd prefer having a more enjoyable versus experience, I'd recommend playing it with friends as well. To conclude, I'd like to say that despite the game being over 10 years old, it is still one of the best action horror FPS of all time!
