I wanted to love this, the idea of sailing through a universe on a ship barely held together by your efforts has such potential.

However, any game that can have completely random events erase your hard work in defiance of logic and physics just isn't fun.

Mechanically the core loop is interacting with planets and wreckage, both have a chance to cause an infestation on your ship that you cannot mitigate, only help the chances with placing key structures further away and turrets - this is far from foolproof, the infestations will pass through non aligned squares, past barriers and turrets alike half the time, and it creates a cockup cascade where your hard work is gone through no fault of your own

Avoid this game.

overwhelmingly positive at the moment.

I don't know why, it doesnt feel overwhelmingly positive to play - so why is it?.
The simple reason is it makes no attempt to hide that it is at its core, a calm town arranging busywork game with lots of grinding with no real stress or time constraints. This is something to unwind with, to shut off most of your brain and have no nasty surprises, the progress you make through the grinding is consistent and rewarding enough to keep you at it.

It's overwhelmingly positive for those looking for a low effort but competent unwinding game with decent polish, something where I could happily snag 15-30 minutes here or there. If you are looking at this, you may well be it's target audience, give it a go

This is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played - the pixel art is so fluid and everything so full of life, the simplicity of the art makes large views with a lot happening easier to take in on a glance.

I could recommend this just on the graphics or just on the beautiful soundtrack, but it's how alive the hub is and the attention to detail, as well as the variation between characters that elevate this so far above standard roguelikes

I've watched grave of the fireflies and FMA.
I've Played telltales walking dead, Lost Odyssey, undertale and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
They made me sad, they were in their own ways heavy and approached loss in beautiful ways that I will always remember, but the sadness was like passing a street light in a car, intense but brief

But spiritfarer broke me
full on man sobs by the end.

If you ever heard people talking about watching, reading or playing something that brings genuine emotion and just kind of wondered why you're always so unmoved when others haven't, this is your best chance of understanding.

Minor spoilers with thoughts:
You help anthropomorphized spirits of people who have been a part of the main characters life.
The game never beats you over the head with their tales.
It's all through offhand comments, metaphor in game events (The minigames all match a part of the relevant characters psyche), attitudes and small heartfelt snippets and it feels organic and natural.
The core gameplay loops of building/farming/gathering isn't awful, the charm with the setting and animations help make it more tolerable than it would be


Big spoilers
Depending on your personal life and your experience of loss, different characters will hit you a lot harder.
A lot of us have probably seen the zero punctuation review where the elderly hedgehog with dementia recognised the main character for a brief moment at the end? - I would bet money that's a reflection of something

In some cases it's a young child lost, a loved one just disappearing leaving questions unanswered, someone at the end of life feeling nothing they have ever done will have mattered or be preserved.
The two that got me the most was the kind lady who had cancer and fought it with every last bit of strength, and another lady who had to be strong for everyone she ever met and wasted her life on someone who only disrespected and cheated her, the world felt to dark for her to light up.

It's a kind of buckshot approach, some pellets are going to miss you, but some are going to hit.

+ Beautiful and interesting

- Entirely too reliant on constant jump scares I can't stress enough that this is the core game play part is loud, constant jump scares every couple of steps in some areas.
- Chase sequences that feel out of place in the game and can force you past missable items

This is super fun with friend's!

I'm someone that dislikes jump scares and enjoys creeping, mounting horror. This is the sweet spot for me.

I cant wait for more maps and more mechanics


Edit: Worth saying, it really hasn't got old after playing so long - truly a masterpiece with good (and cowardly) friends
