This is a great game, with so many different ways to play. With nine classes, seemingly hundreds of weapon loadouts, and high customizability, there is no end to the fun you could have. Wanna play for fun? Go ahead. Heal the enemy team, rocket jump, and spy crab. Wanna play to win? Go ahead. The game has so many layers of learning to it. When you first start playing, it can be confusing, and even discouraging for new players. But it's so incentivizing to learn more about the world around you. I remember the first time I rocket jumped, I was bewildered by what I had just done. And just when you think you think that you've mastered something, you'll see a top tier player do it even better. Or maybe you'll think of a way that you could do it better your self. The game is fun to play by yourself, and even more so with a group of friends.

Here are the problems with the game:
The default settings are a joke. This is part of why I think that the game is discouraging to newer players. Here are some settings that I'd reccomend:
First, go to "Settings>Keyboard>Advanced", and check both of the boxes. (Fast weapon switch doesn't have to do with the following, I'd just highly reccomend it) Hit OK, and proceed.
Press "`" to go into the console. Enter these commands if you so choose
  • fov_desired 90
  • viewmodel_fov 90 (this one is all up to preference, play around with it until you find what's comfortable)
  • tf_use_min_viewmodels (also up to preference)

There are plenty of other settings you can change, so if you're curious just do a little bit of research. Also, the default HUD is pretty cluttered. I'd reccomend going to huds.tf to find one that you like. You should also go into your advanced settings and check everything that seems good. Play around with different settings, and you'll eventually find what works for you. I'd reccomend the following.
  • Accumulate combat text damage events into a single number
  • Remember active weapon between lives
  • Sniper: Sniper rifle will re-zoom after firing a zoomed shot
  • Medic: Medigun continues healing without holding down fire button
  • Medic: Injured teammates automatically call out (I have my slider for this set around 75%)

Overall, if your PC can run it, (and most should), there's no reason not to try this game out.
