The Downloadable Content packs are really necessary to get the full feel of the vibrant and dynamic state the world was in even back then, and how life was so brutal and fragile back before there was modern medicine. The modding community adds even more stories and events, which there already is a lot of to begin with, literally thousands of hours (and many centuries in the game). The detail that the game goes into to make the starting points and characters accurate to their true natures is impeccable, astonishing even. Of course as you play your game the world changes and diverges from reality, but that's what makes the game so great. You can make your experience strict to what would have happened back then, or you can add in magic/fantasy/alternatehistory/anachronism to whatever degree you desire. Its like an immense sandbox where you can be king (or Queen, Emperor, Empress) of whatever culture or belief you can think of. Get ready for its super new sequel: Crusader Kings 3. It's coming out 1st quarter 2020, updating the game's mechanics and visual displays of characters, quests, graphics user interface and so much more!!!
