You play as Artyom, a Russian tunnel dweller in a post-apocalyptic Moscow. In 2013, when Artyom was very little, the world was destroyed by an apocalyptic event that nearly wiped out all mankind. This nuclear fire poisoned the earth’s surface and 40,000 people in Moscow fled into the Metro system (the subway system) where they reside today. Artyom describes the setting as a “war to determine the very existence of our species".

When the story begins, there is already an established underground life system- “Metro System-Cities” – that is struggling for survival against each other, the mutant life forms outside the cities, and, most importantly, against the “Dark Ones”, who attack your mind as well as your body. You are given the task of traversing through the dangerous Metro system in order to save your family, friends, city, and the rest of mankind.

There is no doubt this story is intriguing, and the game does a fine job of establishing setting; the feeling of nothingness and despair is great, and I also loved that you use ammunition as currency.

The station-villages are dreary but you'll come to regard them as beacons of light in the pervasive darkness of the tunnels, as you venture away from the comforting firelight and busy soundscape of the crowded stations, you enter tunnels that echo with the howls of murderous beasts, where the only illumination is provided by glowing radioactive fungi or your own headlamp. lack of light plays a huge role in creating 2033's engaging atmosphere. Passing through a dark, foggy tunnel can be bone-chilling, even entering the warm glow of an electric lamp can't relieve the palpable tension, the inescapable shadows create a omnipresent sense of dread and desperation which help create a powerful sense of gloom when moving through the surroundings of Metro 2033. This world isn't without hope however, though much of your adventure plays out in the subway, don't expect to see the same old dilapidated tunnels over and over again. Human settlements are far between but as soon as you see them you'll be thankful to have noticed the outposts cobbled together from scrap and salvage.

Metro 2033 is a well-paced shooter that will likely take you more than 10 hours to complete. It is punctuated by emotional and dramatic moments ( also a few intense railcar sequences) though these aren't without their own idiosyncrasies (the immersion-busting "quickly tap x" prompt). Many elements of the game aren't quite up to modern shooter standards, but taken as a whole, they come together nicely. The pervasive atmosphere is largely responsible for this cohesion, creating a grim, enthralling world that you feel compelled to explore. Though it is not without its perils, Metro 2033 is a very worthwhile game for anyone craving a uniquely rewarding journey into man's dark future.

2033 rewards the player for paying attention to the little things but doing so is also likely to reveal graphical imperfections that may dilute your immersion. Environmental textures, character models, and animations all suffer technical oddities, but none of these issues are truly jarring. It's more of a general graphical roughness that makes the game's visuals feel a bit dated. The grimy tone does a fair job of covering up these blemishes, though, and you'll usually be too busy worrying about what's coming out of a hole to lament the odd textures in and around it.

Metro 2033 is also a fairly unstable game at times, as I found myself getting stuck on fences and walls, as well as fighting an unintentionally invincible enemy that couldn't be killed. Another unusual glitch is when you try and replace the filter in your gas mask. The animation of swapping filters will play, but the filter is not actually changed. And every Metro player knows how important gas masks are especially the act of maintaining it by changing filters.

2033's atmosphere and unique design choices will make it a worthwhile experience for some, but 2033 suffers from a number of issues (poor implementation of stealth, recurring glitches, etc.). Fans of post-apocalyptic stories (or fallout fans) should consider giving this a shot, if they can tolerate the aforementioned setbacks.

All in all though, it was a surreal experience, it can seem quite dilapidated at times but in hindsight Metro 2033 is a dark journey saturated with an enthralling atmosphere that will reward intrepid adventurers so make no mistakes, this future is bleak. you will feel the depression of the land with every turn, at the end of your journey you'll have became a hardened veteran and survivalist in the merciless post-apocalyptic world of Metro 2033.
