I purchased the original risk of rain this same week ten years ago and this review is coming out 15 hours after the game came out, equivalent to my playtime. I woke up 5 minutes before the game went live and was playing less than a minute after it was purchasable and I do not have even the slightest tinge of regret that I did. Risk of Rain Returns is exactly what I had hoped for, even more so than I imagined. A faithful remake with an incredible coat of paint added. The new artwork and the remastered music are perfect. There's even options to disable all of the new content, use the old spritework and act like it's the original with a few new characters and quality of life upgrades. The only genuine complaint I have after unlocking every character and doing at least 2/3rds of the providence trials is that I am not a fan of one of the new enemies and a new boss, which is honestly minuscule. This game is a love letter to fans of risk of rain, thank you hopoo games for the series, and thank you gearbox for giving them one hell of a sendoff.
