The last time I played platformers was back in 2002-03 (8 Bit video games!). Then, I saw Hollow Knight on Steam. The trailer immediately got my attention & I bought the game. By the time I'm reviewing the game, I've already spent 85 hours playing this game.

If you're looking to start playing platformers, this game is probably the best choice.

1. Music 5/5

Every area has different music, which perfectly matches the environment of it. It makes you want to explore those areas even more. It is in complete harmony with the theme. In my opinion, this is one of the best parts of the game where it surpasses expectations. The music helps you keep going even you're frustrated either because of boss fights or difficult to reach zones.

2. Level Design 4/5

The levels are amazing. If you're new to 2D platformers, don't worry even if you get lost in some areas. You'll eventually find yourself progressing in such levels. However, it does get insanely difficult in some of the areas of the game. You'll have to have great control over your movements otherwise, you're just gonna end up with frustration.

3. Combat 4/5

The game gives player two core methods of combat- Swords & Spells. As you explore the game, you'll get upgrades for both of them. However, it's up to you to choose your own way of fighting. Although you can use both of the ways, you'll only be able to give one of them a boost using charms. (Charms are nothing but items which ease out things)

The boss fights can get trickier & tougher but you get used to them. Also, if you want to make those fights easier, you can go hunting for upgrades or farming money to buy those upgrades.

4. Difficulty 5/5

Not only the boss fights are insanely difficult but also some of the areas/levels are get pretty hard. I'd suggest you take a 2-3 mins break before continuing again if you do get annoyed due to one of these. As I mentioned earlier, it does require some time to master the combat & movements. Each bosses have some pattern of attacking, you'll have to understand it to beat them effectively. Same goes for movements in difficult areas, where you may have a couple of options to go around.

5. World, Art & Animation 5/5

For an indie game, this game totally nails it. This part perfectly blends with music of the game. You'll experience yourself getting immersed deeply in the beautiful world this game has. Every area has a different theme, different set of NPCs & hidden sub-areas too!

I recommend that you buy a controller to have smoother experience. (totally worth it for playing such platformers)

I'm very grateful to Team Cherry for making this game beyond perfect. I've never had such an astonishing gaming experience in any game I've played before (including AAA titles too).

I'm eagerly waiting for the next release, Hollow Knight : Silksong. All the best, team cherry! I'm pretty confident that you're going to make it even more successful.

Thanks!
