Elite: Dangerous may not be for everyone, but if you want to just casually jump in a space ship and enjoy the sights of the galaxy, I'd definitely recommend it.

Alot of people complain about lack of depth, but I say those people lack imagination. In my almost 2000 hours in game, I have
  • Worked out complicated trading routes to maximise my profits
  • Bounty hunted at compromised navigation beacons and mining fields for pirates
  • Pirated other players myself
  • Took part in various community goals to further the in game background narrative
  • Explored thousands of star systems en route to the center of the galaxy.
  • Raced SRV's on planets surfaces...
I could go on and on.
Frontier have given the player the tools to play the game how they want to and I'm very greatful that they haven't pandered too much to the naysayers because the game wouldn't be Elite if everything was spoon fed to you.

I love this game, and I'm sure I'll have thousands more hours of gameplay out of it as the years go on and they release more content.
