I found this to be such a beautiful game and highly recommend it to people that want a good story about mental health traumas that is built in slight horror elements. Where do I begin? I went into this knowing nothing during the steam summer festival awhile back with the demo. Thinking it was going to be a full on horror game, I found myself pleasantly surprised that I wasn't overwhelmed by the horror and instead was invested in the story. Come full release my friend got it for me, but it was put on hold for many months. Finally I have finished it and I loved the experience.

The gameplay is akin to a horror game with metroidvania elements. Each story gives you a new "weapon" that is integral during said story. As you are introduced to the new elements, you will still be greeted by old elements so it never feels stale. I thoroughly enjoyed each tool and the different mechanics that they added. You also are equipped with a couple of guns to fend off shadow-like enemies at times. Finally, each story introduces a new "boss" enemy that changes the way you need to play the game (sneaking, using a mirror all the time, guns a blazing) which adds variety and kept me from getting bored. Granted there were a couple of boss fights and areas that I wish were fleshed out a little more but that is to be expected.
Then we come to the story that won't be for everyone as it revolves around trauma and the mental health struggles that come with it. I noticed some arguing that it wasn't written very well from that standpoint but I never noticed an issue while playing. I constantly felt the emotion and struggle that each character had been through, and how it had turned them into the monster they are. Beating levels was always bitter sweet. And to have my trusty adorable talking cat at my side through it all, made me want to see it through to the end...no matter how sad it may become. Being that I felt connected to these characters from my own trauma may have also made me a little biased.
However, I found it to be a wonderful game with an interesting take on trauma and I hope it gets the popularity that it deserves! 9/10

Wow, what an experience! F.E.A.R. was so far ahead of its time that it still feels like it hasn't aged. I'm convinced that if it was released recently it still would do well. F.E.A.R. is a game that sneaks up on you. At first you think you are playing an action game with the great AI and slo-mo fight sequences that define the gameplay. But slowly, with every chapter that goes by, horror elements are introduced as the story unfolds. Jumpscares, a creepy dude that peeks around corners, and a crawling alma are just a small sample of said elements, but each never overplay their hand or overstay their welcome. F.E.A.R. is that game that I will recommend to everyone as I feel it is the standard bearer. This game should be what other action horror titles strive to make. A mysterious wonderfully written story with twists and turns, gameplay that doesn't stale, and the small horror elements to keep you on your toes. Perfection! 10/10

After finishing all of the endings, I feel obligated to review my time as this game hasn't had too many reviews. The problem is that while I enjoyed my time playing, I am left feeling somewhat indifferent on the experience. On one hand, I truly enjoyed the narrative that was shown throughout each ending. I was pleasantly surprised by the story and the twists. On the other hand, I found some of the puzzles to be a little difficult in which I needed a nudge in the right direction. However, I don't think they were incredibly hard to the point that the hints or walkthrough didn't make any sense. I enjoy the creepy vibe it had going on, the horror wasn't anything too special, and some of the cutscenes can be rough to watch multiple times as you can't skip them. That being said, I think I just got unlucky as you aren't supposed to get those cutscenes on different playthroughs.

All in all, I really enjoyed my time and for the sale price of 2.50 I found it to be a steal! Good 4 hours of gameplay, if not more depending on each person. I look forward to the next game by the Brian Clarke. 7/10

Very rarely does a sequel surpass the original, but to do it to the level that Little Nightmares 2 does especially with how good the first was, it is a sight to behold. Where do I begin? The music and atmosphere are fantastically horrifying as this dread slowly creeps up on you until you are engulfed by it. The story keeps you invested as you are curious to learn more about the world while watching what becomes of your two little adventurers. Personally I found the story much more easy to follow than the original. While I did enjoy the first, I ended up googling an explanation to help me piece it all together. I didn't really have that issue with the second in the series, only googling more about the lore afterwards because of how much I wanted to learn every tiny bit of lore I could.

Finally, the "monsters". Wow....I was blown away at how memorable each were. It truly felt like I was in a Junji Ito masterpiece. Constantly these monsters would have some aspect to them that would play off my lesser known phobias, constantly making me wince and squirm as I tried to escape. *Slight Spoiler* Whether it be a teacher with an extendo-neck or an incredibly tall slender slow moving man, I was frightened *Spoiler over*.

I definitely recommend this game to anyone that likes horror, a captivating story, Junji Ito, etc. Never have I so quickly been scared and then laughed at some of the cute moments or funny death scenes. I was never upset at any of my deaths, which is always a plus, so go play it. Stop reading, buy it, support the devs, and enjoy the game!

Outlast 2 is one of those horror games that I constantly want to like, but it just never appeals to me. At its core, it feels very much like a jump scare + chase simulator which I find to be cheap horror. For me personally, it just startles me and then leaves me annoyed that I have to constantly run, hide, run, hide, predictable jump scare. Not to say that horror style isn't for everyone, but it sure lays on its tropes rather thick. I never felt that atmospheric dread that can be truly horrifying from this game. Only during certain parts in the school was atmospheric horror really prevalent with a soundtrack that is reminiscent of a Shepard Tone, basically a way to artificially instill fear and tension. But even if those fleeting moments of atmospheric horror, it will always be ruined be another jump scare or chase sequence. This always made the game feel cheap in my eyes as each attempt at horror feels too forced. Instead of letting your brain play tricks on you like in Amnesia or Alien Isolation, it would rather go for the redundant jump scare, the annoyingly consistent running away from enemies, and even the artificial use of the Shepard Tone instead of making a good soundtrack. It just feels like you are moving from set piece to set piece as a lot of this is done in tight corridors. What opened with a lot of running through open fields of corn stalks, leads to many chase sequences in small maze-like corridors. As if they are thrusting you forward to the next area that they have made.

As for the story, it was very okay. Religious overtones, apocalyptic foretellings, and very unmemorable characters to be honest. For some reason, everything just felt so forced into the story as if the writers first idea was to make a scary game with religion playing a key role, but never tried to flesh it out. So, everything is kind of predictable or just plain weird. Not my cup of tea and this is coming from a person that loves watching horror movies for those weird/bad plots.

So, I personally wouldn't recommend Outlast 2 unless jump-scares and chase sequences are something that you do find scary. In the end, it really just depends on your favorite horror gameplay elements. If that is something that interests you, go for it, I'm sure this will be a great addition to your collection. If not, dodge it.

I REALLY love this game and REALLY want a sequel! I have played through this game twice (once on playstation and once on steam) and still love each and every aspect to the game! I find this to be a big plus because usually when you play through a game the second time, there are some parts that you roll your eyes at and think "not this part again". But I never had that thought for this.

Basically, you are thrust into a story about family, overcoming obstacles, a loss of innocence, and of course the plague. You will be pleasantly surprised by the story as you weave through this tale with many ups, downs, and sharp turns. The character building is top notch, the dialogue and voice acting are sublime, and the gameplay kept me going throughout it all. The best genre I can compare it to would be a walking simulator, but it is so much more than that. You are tasked with keeping the characters alive by sneaking past enemies, or defeating them with the many tools at your disposal. It is easy enough for anyone to grasp, while still keeping your attention and not becoming stale.

This is a game that everyone should play at some point! Please make a sequel!

Fantastic! I kickstarted this a while ago and finally got around to playing it. I hate that it took me so long to get around to playing it as I enjoyed every part of the game! The story was fantastic with a great ending, in my opinion, the puzzles were challenging but not overbearing (except for one that I needed to look up), and the graphics were stellar. I also really loved that the inventory/map tab was a physical manifestation in the game that I could walk around and look at. It made me feel even more immersed in the setting. I highly recommend buying and playing it!

I only really write reviews when I feel strongly about a game, whether it is good or bad. After coming off of playing part of Observer and disliking most of the game, I decided to try Layers of Fear out to see if this was any better. I can safely say it is better but still not great. See, the game is filled with jump scares as its main source of horror and that tends to get annoying and boring after seeing it constantly. I just don't see the appeal in random loud noises to scare me over creating an atmosphere that fills me with dread. Having a door shake with monster noises behind it should scare me and make me not want to proceed through it, but I found that I would always go straight for that door in this game because I wanted to experience something that would put me on edge. But sadly, all you really get is jump scares and therefore I can't recommend it as a horror game unless you are okay with that.
The music is pretty good however, as well as the graphics and I would say the story isn't half bad. However, I am noticing that Bloober team is becoming synonymous with over the top effects that cause motion sickness. It saddens me that both games I have played were filled with these effects that didn't add anything in terms of horror and didn't really make the game better in any way that I saw. If they were to take away these effects/filters, I think I would have enjoyed myself more even with the fact that I wasn't too scared.
In the end, if you are okay with a horror game just being jump scares and don't get motion sickness from those types of effects then I would recommend Layers of Fear but in my opinion there are better options.

Sayonara Wild Hearts is indescribable. I went in knowing almost nothing and was skeptical about the reviews after the first few levels, but damn was I proven wrong immediately. It definitely is a must play for everyone, the soundtrack and visuals alone make the game immensely beautiful and fun to play. That is as much as I can say as the game is meant to be experienced and I highly recommend it!

I sadly wasn't able to back this game when it was on kickstarter, but I did snag it when I saw it on steam over the lunar sale. Finally got around to playing it and all I can say is wow, what a fantastic game! The scenery is breathtaking and the story
is captivating. I love walking simulators when they tell a good story, however this game focused heavily on exploration and animal design with a good story to back it up. Being an animal lover, I found that balance kept me coming back over and over until I finished it. Whether I was losing it over how cute some of the baby animals were, running around getting collectibles, or progressing the story, I was enthralled. I highly recommend playing it if you too love a good story, walking simulators, or just love animals.

The only con that I noticed while playing was that the camera seemed to be a little fidgety, and would sometimes become a little unresponsive to my mouse. Hopefully that is just a personal issue and not something that everyone experiences.
