One of the most talked about indie titles of 2013 Gunpoint delivers. It's a perfect couch and laptop game that balances a well written humorous story with easy to navigate gameplay and rpg elements. Its not very long, maybe 3-4 hours but with replayability and Steam workshop, Gunpoint will remain installed on my laptop for a long time.

Positives
A well written, suprisingly funny story. Choices will decide ending.
Awesome noir music
Relaxing puzzle game
Simple aesthetic but fits perfectly
Action is fun. Jumping off a building, through glass, kicking down doors.
A spy game! More spy games!

Negatives
Bugs, especially with mousewheel.
A little too easy.
Lots of potential not explored. A hacking minigame, a stealth/ violent rpg tree, more enemy types
Maps and goals dont change very much.

Simply put The The vansihing of Ethan Carter is the evolution of the point and click adventure. If you grew up and enjoyed those types of games as i did then prepare yourself for the future.
Firstly, lets get the obvious out of the way, the world is absolutely gorgeous. Indoor, outdoor, lighting all looks amazing. When you see all the grass and trees moving in the wind it is very impressive. I could go on and on about the graphics, but thats just one feature.
I really like how there is a small intro at the start and then it's where do you go, what do you want to do as you walk out of a tunnel. You play as Paul Prospero a pyschic detective who has shown up in the town of Red Rock to find a young fan who has dissappeared. The game is about exploration, and discovery. As you explore about you will come upon bodies who you will then try to piece together how they died. If you are a fan of Sherlock, its basically the same concept of finding the obvious and not so obvious clues and then placing events in chronological order and watching the crime unfold. Its a lot of fun, effective and the most important part, tells a cohesive story.
Without going into story spoliers, after you have completed the game i would suggest going to the deveopers discussion :http://www.theastronauts.com/2014/10/vanishing-ethan-carters-ending-extreme-spoilers/ Super interesting read and will help fill in some holes.
My only dissapointment in the game is the length. I would have liked a few more puzzles but sometimes that is not the answer. The value for me is in the experience and i can easily say it was worth the price of admission.

Positives
Pushes point and click games forward
Graphical powerhouse
Solid story and satisfying ending
The musical score is amazing
Slenderman type level in the mines
Coming out of detective vision back into the color of the world
No hand holding

Negatives
Length
Not fully open world
Sound is minimal and charcter models look bad when you comapre to the amazing enviroments
Exploring off the path is not rewarding. Thought i found a cave off in the woods, on top of a boulder behind a tree, but no access.
Enviromental effects are not utilized. Water dripping in the cave, or rocks falling as an example.

Xcom EU comes from Firaxis, the makers of the highly succesful Civilization series. What they did in 2012 was basically resurrect not only the forgotten turn base genre(outside Civ of course), but a series(Xcom) that had been basically left for dead and then turn it into a consensus GOTY. I have never reached 100+ hrs faster and no game has consumed my soul as much as Xcom. This game is about patience, timing, and budgeting and thats not even describing the combat situations where one false move, just one, and i guarentee you are going to be bringing home body bags. The questions is how many?
If the Civilization series has been known as "one more turn" for its addictive gameplay, then Xcom's motto is "one more mission" becasue you cant stop, i dare you to try.

Positives
Beating a mission is as satisfying as a strong run in Dark Souls
Maps, while static, are reused but from different starting points keeps the games different each playthrough.
The controller scheme is absolutely perfect.
Each mission, each combat scenario never is easy.
From start to finish, every decison is meaningful and possibly catastrophic at the same time.
Its genius is the simplistic asthetic at first and then understanding the complexities as you dive deeper.
Its brutal, but fair. Sometimes.
I love the fact you can basically break the game by just skipping the story missions.
The tutorial is basic. It took me 2 playthroughs maybe 3 before i fully understood mostly everything.

Negatives
You will lose sleep, possibly girfriends, friends and family. Its a soul stealing, life sucker.
There are bugs from sound quitting to random crashes.
Line of sight is difficult to equate especially when flanking.
Though you are doing missions around the world every map looks like you are in the US.
The elevation penalty for enemies is drastically understated when they are located below your player.
No way to sneak up on enemies until very, very late in game. They basically get a free turn to find cover.
Paid $6 to customize the team with different armor colors, helmets. Totally worth it but its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at the same time.
The inventory UI is bad. Should have been a shared inventory system.

My quick tips if you are going to try iroman:
1. Forgo armor early and build lasers
2. Understand taking an abduction will reduce that countrys alerat status, but the others you ignore will raise their continent +2
3. Always find Full coverage. This is a must.
4. NEVER go down the middle of a map.
5. Keep switching in and out team members to build a deep bench.
6. Dont crowd squad close together, but keep them close enough they can all get a shot.
7. If already in combat, dont move ahead further and trigger enemies hiding in fog of war. Patience.

This is a very weak recommendation as i have struggled to try to weigh the positives and negatives of Lifless planet. There are some absolute high moments in the game, but the lows are very low. Ultimately i was dissapointed but not from the gameplay, or game but more from the decisions from the lone designer. Major props again to anyone who takes 3 years of their time to amass such an experince, but in todays indie world collaboration within the community should have steered him towards a much more polished product. Again, im recommending solely if you are a player who enjoys a flawed, yet unique experience.

Positives:
Atmopshere and sense of lonliness is unique
Enviroments are mostly the same but different enough to not feel stagnate
Music is an excellant balance between Deus Ex and Journey
Controls were tight solid jumping and platforming
A very relaxing game
No hud or map
Some moments can make your hands sweat and others can make you jump out of your seat

Negatives
Never sold on either story
Textures are terrible, and no shadows
Graphically amatuerish- Should have hired artists
Lighting and sky give for some spectacular views
Simple puzzles
Old ideas need refreshing( tape recorders for back story)
Pacing
Waaaayyyy tooo long(7 hours with exploring)
Survival basics are basically ignored

A gamers game, Darksiders 2 tries to reach epic status but its all too familiar gameplay overshadows a good open world action title.

Darksiders was one of my favorite New IPS in the last couple of years. I remember it basically came out of nowhere and was the God of War for everyone who did not own a Sony console. I love me some GOW and Darksiders was different enough that i enjoyed it in much the same way. Darksiders 2 builds upon that success of the first title with improvements across the board but its highs are seemingly balanced by some dissapointing lows. As i said, Darksiders 2 is a gamers, game and that trumps a lot of negative aspects i had but is also a tip of the cap to the developer, Vigil, for the time, love and effort they put into this franchise and hopefully we will see more. It's totally an entertaing hack and slash dungeon exploer that fans of the genre will no doubt enjoy.

Also, i started/finished the game on Apocolyptic and except for some early mini bosses with saws for hands, I did not feel it was very difficult.

Pros
huge open world with each region having a different feel and look
A lot of loot and deep customiztion
Controls and combat are rock soild
Combo system is easy to remember and yet deep
Dungeons are huge(over an hour if looking for everything) and the architecture is impressive.
Able to fast travel out of a dungeon,at ANYTIME, and return to same place. YES!
2 skill trees to place skill points.
Exploring and puzzles never gets old
Animation of chacters fighting, talking or just jumping around excellant

Cons
Poor explantion of certain RPG elements, Thorns anyone?
The world is lifeless
No block or run fast buttons
Maps found in dungeons are bascially useless. Why not show where all the collectibles are?
The NPC are extremly well voiced but have nothing to say after the first area. HUGE missed opportunity.
How does Death not know where the city of the dead is?
Point allocation is poorly executed. It makes you play though twice to unlock everything.IMO this should never be the case.
Side missions are too few and are for the most part hidden
A lot of enemies have a (Too)long reach in which it is very difficult to avoid.
Spell casting is difficult becasue you are the slowest player in the battle
Acheivment list could have used some comabt/weapon goals
Death is too much Dante(Dantes Inferno) and not enough kratos(GOW) in attitude.

A diamond that is not polished, but still shines Game of thrones delivers in almost every way any AAA developer could only hope to succeed. Developed prior to the GOT phenomenon Cyanide stuidos should be given a LOT of credit for the first real game entry into the GOT world. I would comapre GOT to Dragon Age 2 in a lot of its negative ways(Linear, lack of locations) but equal in RPG elements, strong characters, fun gameplay but far superior in story and structure. I am no GOT expert. I have not watched the series, or read the books but this now has me more interested than ever before.
The real game is now behind the scenes for the GOT license. Does Cyanide secure, or does Bethesda, Bioware or Paradox who has been coming on strong get into the game?

Warning: To fully enjoy you have to be willing to immerse yourself into this world like reading a book. If only here for the combat, look elsewhere.

Positives:
One of the best RPG stories from start to finsih in the last 10 years
Great RPG elements and level up system
Main character voice acting
Dark, mature story
One of the absolute worst villans in recent memory
Satisfying and fair combat(keeping everyone alive)
I actually read a lot of codex. I never read codex.
Finishing moves cringe worthy
Didnt see that, or that coming

Negatives:
A common trait with deep RPGs a lot of systems that are not fully realized, or useable
Minor balancing issues void the use of potions and poisons
A very slow start-10 hours before the action starts
Side charcter voice acting on some occasion is laughable
Map on the main screen frustrating
Its just plain ugly at first but actually after a while doesnt matter.
Late side missions are out of place and unneccesary
Lack of weapon variety

Not since Dead Space or bioshock has a game immersed me into a world with sights and sounds unlike any other. As a huge fan of the S.t.a.l.k.e.r. series and post-apocolyptic games to me Metro is the pinnacle of the genre. Yes, there are the action set pieces, stealth sections, and an arsenal of weapnary for any FPS fan to enjoy, but for me its the attention to detail, the realism of the world, the slow methodic pacing that builds tension and despair around every corner. If you do play the game, make sure it is on hardcore difficulty as it presents a much more realistic experience as oppossed to those "professional" reviewers who play on easy and takes away everything the game has to offer. A game that will remain installed on my current and future PC for a long time.

Positives
Totally realistic, detailed world
Unique weaponary
Some of the best lighting effects ever
What i alwasy wanted S.t.al.k.e.r. to acheive
not your typical run and gun FPS
Exploring is rewarding
Multiple ways to approach some situations
AI is reactive
Watching credits roll and seeing this was done by such a smaller team than expected

Negatives
Last chapters are over too quickly
Sound is good, but all i could think was if D.I.C.E had done the sound
All the immersion and such and no hands while climbing ladders(i know a dumb neg. but always one of my pp)
Its totally linear for the majority, but cant wait for a Metro open world
Very scripted encounters througout
Story is good not great, and a lot of questions unanswered

As someone who grew up playing and loving a lot of FPS its been actually a long time since i have played one, let alone one with mouse and kb. Alpha Prime is a game that reminds me of the fun of i had with those games, but also more of reminder of just how far game dev. has come in such a short time. AP was released in 2007 alongside the likes of the first Uncharted, MW4, Crysis, Halo 3 to name just a few. Thats tough company to be a part of and why AP is forgettable. But while AP is just another Half-Life inspired shooter with horrible voice acting, terrible writing, and story the action is pretty intense, the level design and setting is strong and the game on normal setting was very challenging. If you are looking to scratch that nostalgic FPS itch Alpha Prime is not a bad choice.

The Good
Setting,levels and pacing
Leaning and being patient is vital for survival
Intense firefights
No shield, No regenerating health, no auto aim
AI is smart and always moving

The Bad
Horrible voice acting, writing, story
Useless weapons(hammer, grenades, flamethrower) and bulletime
Why do i pick up horbarrdium, and vials scattered throughout lockers and levels are not used?
AI is a little too perfect in aiming

Anytime during a game i am telling myself "This could have been better if...", or "I wish they would have done this..." its usually not good, which is rare for me. But H2S has so many good things, its in the vein of when i first played S.t.a.l.k.e.r.(one of my all time fav) or Dead Island(good game) there are too many systems going on for it all to come together to make it great. As an example, there are only a dozen or so enemies and they will spawn in exactly the same point every time, the level up system doesnt really make too much sense on why it is so limited in scope. I could make explosive arrows, but not ammo? I held onto some of the unique flowers never finding any use, etc. But ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ if i didnt have fun and that is what it is all about. I thought the story was actually pretty good meaning B movie quality good, and some of the side missions are ok but very rewarding. The game looks really good, comabt was solid, and the crafting is actually pretty smart. If you run through games and nit pick at every little thing i wouldnt recommend but if you enjoy exploring and doing quests its a worthy journey.

If i told you i know of an RPG that is not open world, has minimal customization, no quests page, no point distribution, and a limited skill tree would you be intrested? If you said no then you may be missing out one of the best tactical RPGs of the last couple of years. Aaklash Legacy is abut one thing and one thing only, combat. You can set it up as you like(Pause anytime, or RTS), but in order to survive you will have to plan every encounter perfectly becasue the game is brutal even on normal difficulty. What a huge gamble by Cyandie stuidos to basically strip away what you think an RPG NEEDS to be successfull and focusing their time on perfecting a rewarding battle system.

Pros:
Rewarding balanced Tactical combat
Simple and Easy UI
8 unique chacters
Enviroments are common but looks good
Reset skill points anytime
Inventory system

Cons:
Too much filler combat and puzzles
Bosses are very easy
Some charcters not having any heal or shield make them difficult to use
Voice acting and writing can be hit or miss
Limit of 4 skills per charcter
