Yes but with caveats. If you don't read up about the game and put a bit of effort in you will hate this game. It's not a hand holding arcade game like No Mans Sky.
The initial controls are a pain in the butt to learn, especially with keybaord and mouse. If it wasn't for the fact I paid full price for the game I'd probably have given in after 4 hours. But once you get that out of the way then the galaxy is your oyster.
Although the game is playable with keyboard and mouse I would recommend gettting a HOTAS set up, the Thrustmaster HOTAS X can be found for around 35-40 quid if you don't want to break the bank.
The gameplay is what you make of it. Try all the tasks at least once or twice to see what you like. Trading is a good earner and is good for role playing as a haulage pilot, buying from one system then jumping to the next or futher for max profits. As well as the normal goods like gold, water, etc some systems have rare goods which make you more money the futher way you sell them and is a good little earner early on.
I recall combat being annoyingly hard in the first we hours but there have been several large patches to the game since then. But now that I've got further into the game and have several ships combat is a good way to work off some stress and earn credits. It's best when combined with a Community Goal as you will get all the credits for the bounties you claim and a reward once the CG is complete, in the most recent one I earned about 10 mil just from an hour of combat. You can also be a pirate. Just pull people out of space, demand goods then either collect the goods or argue with the other pilot then do combat until one of you wins/runs away/gives up.
Exploration is a mixed bag. You jump to further and futher systems and scan the planetary bodies. If you have the right equipment and you are the first to scan it you get your commander name on it. But there currently isn't any life to stumble upon or lush atomspheric planets or space anamolies at the moment. But exploration is getting improved slowly all the time and a large update is planned in for 2018. You can currently see Black Holes, most star types, all planet types from space and you can land on some planets/moons that don't have an atmosphere.
Mining, I found this increadabley tedious but it can be a good earner.
There is supposdly a story going on but other than some boring aliens showing up after years of them being gone I couldn't tell you much about it. The game is more about what you do and what your ingame buddies do, if you want a space game with a decent story go play Mass Effect.

TL:DR if you like a challenge and good community get it. If you find learning and putting effort in to games too much of a bad idea or unfun then go get Team Fortress 2, it's free now.
